80 minute connection from QF to Cathay in HKG - doable? legal?

Flights finally sorted - using one of my banker DSC Blackall to Longreach bookings - has kept the same PRN so it should bank 240 SC's for my travel in Y.

Will CX out you on those after an involuntary misconnect?
The other thing is bags. depending how late the inbound is, the bags will be on their way to CX.

CX would need to find them and re tag. The MU flight is at 2000, so unlikely to make that. May not even make the 2100 HK airlines.

The faulting carrier, so in this case QF, is responsible for rebooking.
Better tell that to BA.

Was on a DONE3 one year (during the period QF was stopping in DXB).
Had BA to DXB connecting to QF.
BA refused to check me through, the flight was also late (tech issue, aircraft swapped), which meant I missed the connection. Got off the BA flight and rushed to concourse A, made it through transit security (without an onward boarding pass) and made it to the QF gate when boarding was happening.

If either issue had not happened, I would have made the QF flight and it was left to EK ground staff to sort it out.
They called BA in London. No answer.
They then called CX in Hong Kong (who issued the ticket). No answer.
Then they tried Sydney and got an answer from QF.
QF rebooked with 24 hour delay then arranged for a Dubai Connect hotel room (even though I would have been fine to stay in the EK F lounge for the day).

BA then refused the EU261 claim, pretending that it wasn't their problem.

It seems that the "its the other airline" thing is on page 1 of the airline blame game playbook!

Well it seems like Qantas Hotels are living up to their usual reputation with regard to location accuracy for the hotels they are selling 😂

In Cangzhou they are trying to offer me the choice of two different Holiday Inn Express's - but there is only one - and it isn't where Qantas says that either of them are! But hey there is 5000 extra points per booking at the moment to play these games.

And always take a change of undies, shirt, socks and any medication with you as carry on. If you miss the flight and cant get to your luggage, this makes things a bit easier.

What should a misconnecting traveler actually do if they were to arrive on a delayed flight, away from the carrier's main port? Are there always staff around to handle these situations?

As long as the airlines knows about the connection problem (requires being checked through to the next flight), then there is usually staff waiting at the arriving aircraft for the misconnecting passengers.

On the return flights at the end of my 2019 trip, I was connecting through NRT on JAL (LAX-NRT-SYD on JL to QF in SYD).
The flight arrived from LAX on time, the flight to SYD was delayed such that the SYD-CBR flight would be missed. JL staff waiting for me at the LAX aircraft with new boarding pass for SYD-CBR and a voucher valid at most airside shops in NRT T2.

Even in an efficient airport like Hong Kong, no way I'd book an itinerary with just an 80min connection time.

I'd only be comfortable with a 2hr+ transit time, even that's pushing it especially if the QF flight is late.

Sorry, but have to disagree on that one! 50 minutes is actually *plenty* of time for most pax to make their connection. Transit security, especially the ones located along the pier - rather than at the end near immigration - can often be fairly empty. Gets you there with more than enough time for boarding of the next flight.

Agree if you want time to stretch legs, check emails, have a shower if you have lounge access, then 2 hours is about right.

But if you didn’t have lounge access and were connecting BKK-HKG-PVG… no need for lengthy transfers.

The transit procedures are fast, but you are relying on your inbound flight being on time.

For OP, if they are delayed by QF, there are no more CX departures to PVG after about 19:20 so they may be facing an overnight stay in HK

Not a whole lot of choices really - I'm doing the MEL-HKG QF30 and that is my only option to get to HKG really as I am doing DPO-MEL on the dawn flight to connect - - -

Well my connection in HKG is looking a bit lffy at the moment - going to be about 45 minutes late departing MEL, was scheduled to depart at 10:20 but still boarding at 10:57 after boarding was delayed. Hopefully we will make up some time...
