A Baggage Question (This Might Sound Stupid... But Bear With Me!)

Ok, before I start, I did mention in the title that my idea sounds stupid, so if anyone has a better way to do this feel free to suggest it to me... Or just tell me I'm a moron, whatever goes

Ok, so as some might know my planned re-location to MEL is becoming a serious reality. Now I've pretty much worked out that I can move all of my stuff with the 103kg (32+32+32+7) of pre-purchasable baggage that Virgin Australia's booking engine is generously affording to me (all for the low low price of $32)

So, that gets most if not all of my cr*p to MEL without too much fuss or drama (Utilising suitcases or boxes within normal size restrictions)... all of it except one big High-Defintion problem... My nearly brand new TV! :evil:

Now my guess would be that packed into a box it would probably be around the same size as a bike pack that cyclists check in each and every day without too much dramas... but I'm just wondering whether Virgin will um and ah about checking it in as oversized baggage because, well you know, its a little more fragile than a bike would be.

So my question really is this, does this sound stupid or a relatively good idea? I'm thinking that $32+$40 is going to be a hell of a lot cheaper than a removalist.

Any advice on the matter or perhaps a better way to go about it would be much appreciated, its doing my head in at the moment

How heavy is the TV? If it is above 32kg they won't consider it, no matter how much allowance you have.

Domestic carriers exclude themselves from being liable for damage to 'fragile' items.

All in all, you may be better off not flying at all and considering having your stuff driven, including yourself and your 100+kg.

Otherwise, sell the telly and buy a new one.

This might sound dumb. Do you have a car? If not, see if you can do a road trip with a friend, and offer to pay fuel and ferry. I'm sure the opportunity to head north to the big smoke and get some shopping done would be appreciated.

No way woud I ever send a tv on a domestic flight. Sell it or have someone ship it properly, by road/boat

My tv weighs a lot more than my bike. I'm pretty sure they will be on to you.

dont forget if it's a plasma, you will need to transport it upright. not sure it'll fit upright through the baggage door.

We all know that United breaks guitars. We don't know if Virgin breaks TVs. Do you want to the be the first to find out.

Ring a few Melbourne based truck companies I.e. OD Transport, ask for Anthony and ask him if he's back loading ex TAS. If not, try a few more, plead poor student etc and they will look after you I am sure. That way, your gear will arrive safe and via barge rather than having to sell.

Yeah what he said. I'm pretty sure I got a backload from MEL to BNE for about the same amount of stuff for something like $80.
