a bit urgent: keeping platinum another year

I am platinum and my status expires tomorrow (I just realised!).

I haven't travelled at all due to COVID, but will start travelling again in June. I thought I had heard that if I book a fare before my status expires, I can keep platinum for another year. Someone from Qantas told me on the phone in January when I called, but I am fuzzy on the details.

Is this the case? Do I have to book the travel to be completed by a certain time? Can it be with points or must it be with cash?

Sorry for the urgent question. I did try to ask Qantas on the phone (after I waited on hold for 3 hours) and they knew nothing about it.

What flight do I need to book to be eligible for Status Extension?
To be eligible for status extension, you need to book, pay and have the ticket issued on at least one of the following:

  • Any Qantas operated flight with a QF flight number, or
  • Any Qantas Points earning Jetstar international booking with a JQ flight number including Jetstar flights within New Zealand (JQ), Jetstar Japan (GK) and Jetstar Asia (3K) flights. Jetstar domestic flights within Australia are ineligible.
The booking creation date must be made on or after 28 February 2022 and before the member’s current status end date of between 31 July and 31...

The booking creation date must be made on or after 28 February 2022 and before the member’s current status end date of between 31 July and 31 December 2022. The flight must be booked to travel before 31 December 2022.

For the flight to be eligible and contribute towards the Status Extension, the booking must be in the name of the Qantas Frequent Flyer member irrespective of who’s paying for the ticket. Members must ensure their Qantas Frequent Flyer Membership number is added to the booking for it to be eligible.

If you cancel your booking, you will not be eligible for the status extension unless you make another eligible booking.

How can I pay for the new booking?
Eligible bookings can be paid with cash, Qantas TravelPass, Qantas Flight Credit, Qantas Gift cards or with Qantas Points (via a Classic Flight Reward or Points Plus Pay). Bookings can be made directly with Qantas or through a third party such as your preferred travel agent.

Members must ensure their Qantas Frequent Flyer Membership number is added to the booking for it to be eligible. Check if your Membership number has been added to your booking now.

Thank you so much TheInsider! Flight booked, status preserved for another year!
Did you have your status extended for another year? I noticed the link provided by TheInsider was for the anniversary dates July to December. There had been a previous offer for anniversary dates in the first half of the year, but the booking date deadline was some time ago now.

"The booking creation date must be made on or after 28 February 2022 and before the member’s current status end date of between 31 July and 31 December 2022. The flight must be booked to travel before 31 December 2022."

Tagging on the back of this question - do you actually physically have to board the plane? Or can you book the cheapest flight you can find, and just not show up...

Just trying to clarify this "book, pay and have the ticket issued" concept.

Yes. Otherwise there will be a delay while the ground staff and the FAs work out who isn't there, determine whether or not luggage was checked in before taking off.

Once they know who's missing then they will be marked as a no-show and their fare forfeited.

Yea, I’d been wondering some of this myself seeing I booked the cheapest flight I could to trigger renewal.

seems a small possibility I wont be able to fly as I’ll be in recovery following a medical procedure scheduled for the end of the month.

from what I understand, it was the booking not the flying that mattered ....

I’m about to cancel this credit as preventive health issues see me getting competing priorities on the same date

alas
