A dash to Tunisia, Geneva, Portugal and Bahrain (picture review)

How is Tunisia to travel around? Noting you mentioned not as much harassment as Morocco
We have based ourselves in Gammarth about 20 minutes from Tunis and 10 -15 minutes from Sidi Bou Said and Carthage. Taxis are ridiculously cheap, a taxi to Tunis is about $8aud. Food is cheap, lunch is about $4 including a bottle of soft drink.
People are friendly, they immediately start talking to you in French, English is the 3rd language here, similar to when I was Morocco 6 years ago.
I haven’t heard or seen any Aussies here, I’ve only seen mostly French and a few people from the UK. I think the English have those TUI packages where they fly in and basically stay at the resort the whole time.
People here don’t harass you as much, when you walk past their shop or stall they just smile. Makes for a nice change, rather than constantly trying to get talked into going into their shop or buying something.

After a nice sleep in and one last big breakfast in the beautiful courtyard at the villa we headed off to Tunis Airport for the flight to Geneva.
Well it’s currently a shet show here.
Boarding was meant to commence at 1335 for a 1405 departure. It’s currently 1435 and there has not been one single announcement or customer service from the lady at the counter. We can see our plane sitting there, it’s been there for the last 90 minutes we have been here. I assume it’s a mechanical.

The lady at the counter puts her ear phones in to try and stop passengers coming up asking what is happening, that isn’t enough so she gets up and stands behind the pillar and plays on her phone. Still not one single announcement.

Now she has disappeared and the gate is unattended. I decided to go for a walk and I see her at the coffee shop with 2 other staff members talking selfies. Zero care given!

Eventually at 1450hrs the lady returned and the boarding gate open, (no announcement) we lined up and got our passes scanned and we walked down the fixed bridge towards the aero bridge. The aero bridge was roped off and we exited down the stairs. I thought perhaps they are making us board via the rear door for some reason.

Once we were on the ground, a bus pulled up and we were directed into it. Looks like an aircraft swap then!
We arrived at a remote stand and remained on the bus for about 15 minutes whilst they finished cleaning it. No air con on the bus and the sun was directly on the bus. It started to get really hot, with people taking sweaters off and a couple men took their shirts off and remained in their singlets. Kids were crying and some older ladies we’re struggling. 15 minutes felt like a hour on that bus sweltering.

We were finally let off the bus and we boarded via the front door.
I have never seen a company/ staff handle a situation so badly, not one single announcement, no face to face communication, no apologies, it was absolutely incredible. The no communication caused utter confusion, unrest and then to keep us on a bus in the middle of the hot Tunisia sun with no air conditioner without care was ridiculous.

We have arrived in Geneva
First timer here, lovely new airport by the looks of it.
We are staying at the Ibis styles carouge, which is About 15 minutes from the CC.
We went for dinner at Café du Tessin, a great little restaurant 2 min for the hotel and operated by a couple. Wife is front of house, husband is the chef.
We were most definitely the only tourists dining there, and it was great sitting outside with all the locals drinking wine and eating.

Sad but nice you’re now in Geneva. Are you going to Montreux. It’s beautiful walking along the promenade

Unfortunately not, we only had 1 full day in Geneva. I really wanted to do a train trip from Montreux

A big day of walking through Geneva, my first time here. I thought it was lovely, just expensive! Very clean, beautiful around the lake. Being a Saturday, all the locals were out having long lunches.
Saturday Markets in full swing in different areas.
We loved the area we stayed in, carouge. Had a lot more local feel, and had some great restaurants. The hotel had a tram stop right out the front so it was easy to get around.
We had dinner at La hucette, which specialise in steak, it was lovely. Had a bottle of the Swiss Syrah which reminded me of an Adelaide hills Shiraz.
Waiting at Geneva airport ready to fly to Porto with Swiss air in the A220.

MrsOatek's cousin worked for a UN agency in Geneva. He found it so expensive that he moved residence to just across the border in France, and drove across the border each day for work.

But he loved the city and the lake.

Good idea!
I don’t know how people can afford to live in Geneva!

My first time on the A220 and my first impressions were that it’s a beauty.
Spacious, comfortable seats, quiet, I think Qantas has made an excellent decision procuring this aircraft type.

On board, Swiss handed out complementary water and a BOB menu. We ordered the cold cuts which was nice and towards the end, everyone was given a Swiss chocolate.

A distant European cousin of my wife worked in Basle for decades. Like MrsOatek's cousin he lives just across the border in Southern Germany. Even better for him, his pension is paid is Swiss Francs which have been a very good hedge against inflation and currency fluctuations

Which airline?

I looked to stay a night on my recent trip and was quickly frightened off by the costs. How did you find the accom cost in Carouge, and meals?

That looks really, really nice!! Euro-economy ... 2hr flight?
Tunisair was airline we used for our flight from LGW to TUN and TUN to GVA.
Accommodation at the ibis styles was good, nice size room, new hotel. Restaurants across the road and a 5 min walk to more restaurants and bars. The area had a more local feel to it which we enjoyed. It was good to catch the tram back to Carouge after being the city centre and relaxing with a beer in a more chilled environment. When you stay in Geneva, the hotels email you a couple days prior with free unlimited train and tram ticket for your stay. This was great, free train to and from airport and then free trams the whole time. Excellent tram network.

Swiss BOB menu was excellent, the best I’ve seen. You even get to keep the wooden board they serve the cold cuts on!

Thanks; same in Lucerne when I was there recently, but only got it on check-in.

I worked in Basel back in the 90’s. Lived in Lörrach, Germany and walked across the border and back every day. Forgot my passport a few times but after a while the border guards knew me and just waived me through.
