I've taken literally thousands of flights but none quite like today's VA flight. Seat 1F. Boarding was uneventful, pleasant time spent watching the RAAF jets take off. Bose QC20's on, Samsung tablet fired up and all ready to catch up with Shameless. Needn't have bothered as the drama onboard turned out to be way more intense.
Once the fasten seat belt signs were off the CSM went to the front section of Y. Was there for quite some time talking to some passengers. It seemed a bit odd but initially I thought nothing of it. Later he came forward with one male passenger who sat in one of the forward jump seats and was speaking intently to the CSM. Seemed reasonably amicable at this point. A few minutes later a female passenger came rushing through into J, very upset, crying about various things including her partner cheating on her, claustrophobia and being squashed like a sardine and demanding to sit in row 2 (vacant). After trying and failing to get her to return to her seat the CSM sat her there. He retrieved her belongings and spent the next 40 or so minutes going back and forth between the pax in the jump seat and the new occupant of row 2. It was clear that they were together and some sort of big domestic had gone down. Eventually the jump seat pax went back to his own seat. Row 2 remained where she was. I thought that maybe the tears subsided pretty quickly due to the magic powers of the J seat leather or something. This may be unkind however.
I suspect it wasn't the best of flights for that CSM and crew. It also wasn't the best of flights for the J passengers (no service at all until very far into the flight) although the crew did their absolute best and apologized personally to each passenger in J due to the lengthy delay for service.
