A Kimberley kaleidoscope

Most enjoyable. Was yours the optimal time of year to go?

Pretty much. Normally it's not as humid as we experienced at the beginning but they are having a late season. There weren't many cyclones this year, so it was unusually dry in the wet but they did have some late rain in May.

The Kimberley is a balancing act, perhaps more so for the coastal cruises than land trips. If you go right when they start the cruise season in about mid-April, you run the risk of getting hit by a cyclone and it's still very hot and humid - but the waterfalls are usually roaring. Too far into the dry and the waterfalls diminish, but the days are dry and warm.

My coastal cruise a few years back was in late April-early May and took two weeks Broome-Wyndham. As the season goes on, I think the longer cruises diminish into short versions aimed more at fishing, the Horizontal Falls and Montgomery Reef (both tidal driven) because the waterfalls are mostly dry.

Thanks for the report. Have a few mates currently doing a APT trip. I can't quite make out the company name on the side of the bus you were on-Casey?

Great TR and photos - thanks - still on the bucket list

Correct. About half the price of APT and obviously a little more basic but still very good IMO. A small, but long-established, Perth-based wilderness tour business covering all of Australia with quite a variety of tours. Very experienced staff and fun.

Wonderful TR. Great pics.

Couldn't agree more that it is a magical part of the world. Brings back some good memories of a trip I did about 5 years ago. Only touched on some of the areas you went to - but did see Cathedral Gorge, various scenic flights around the area (including to Horizontal Falls) and an ultralight flight around Broome at sunset (including beach landings).

Oh well - another trip added to the "Must see / Must go back" lists.

Thanks so much for the TR JohnM. It's part of the country I have visited many times when I was working but of course no time for the wonderful experiences of your trip. Might just have to go back.
