A long-awaited reunion

When boarding was called we headed down to the gate and through the passport check. The F host escorted us to the door and we were soon onboard. We settled Miss TC into 5K with her iPad and she settled in like she belonged 🤣

We took 4K and 4F so we could surround her. Olives, nuts and champagne were quickly delivered and we were happy to discover it was the 2002 Piper-Heidsieck Rare.

Around an hour after departure we were able to settle Master TC into one of our seats for a nap and enjoy a rare uninterrupted lunch together.

I'd like to say the rest of the flight was uneventful but unfortunately that wasn't the case. The kids were really well behaved until bedtime when Master TC decided he did not want to sleep despite being tired. So we had a lovely four or so hours alternating between trying to convince him to sleep and trying to entertain him to keep the disruption to a minimum. Unfortunately as he got more overtired he got more vocal and the passenger in front of me was not shy in expressing his displeasure. I understand his frustration but there's only so much you can do when you have an overtired 1yo and we used every trick we had including taking him up to the lounge with some toys to keep him away from sleeping passengers. But the grumpy pax grunted, growled, ssssh'd loudly and thumped my seat so hard the TV screen swung and hit one of my kids in the head.

I only just managed to cram some very average breakfast in before landing, and deplaned having barely had 30 minutes sleep. Fortunately we were off the plane quickly and within 5 minutes we were through immigration (no lines! 😳) and waiting for our bags.

So there were 2 people in F behaving like children but only one of them was a child? :p

I bet he would have been one of those loud snorers too. Sleeping deeply yet keeping the entire rest of the cabin awake with their hog noises.

He and his mate spent ages standing around chatting loudly. So that was ok apparently 🙄

Anyways, after we had our bags we headed towards to connecting flights dropoff, only to find that AA wasn't providing that service 🤷🏻‍♀️ so we carted our bags all the way over to T4, went through security then took the connector back to TBIT to use the QF F Lounge. Had to point out we had access due to incoming F flight but all good, and there were all of two other people in the lounge.

The staff were lovely and bought over lots of things for the kids including ice cream 😂 and champagne for mum and dad. Unfortunately I failed to take a photo of the menu but I enjoyed the haloumi fritters, something light to make up for the poor onboard breakfast.

Our flight to as departing from TBIT so it was a short walk to the gate and we boarded in group one. Both kids were sound asleep before the take off roll ☺️

Menu looks the same as QF1 to Singapore in July. I didn’t get to the dessert though!

Sorry to hear MasterTC (and parents) didn't have a good flight. As someone who pays cash for flights in premium cabins, I can sort of (in a small way) relate to the unhappy dude. I have been known to sigh inwardly to myself on seeing small children when I board. I must add though that 9 times out of 10 there has been no effect on the enjoyment of my flight at all. His reaction of shushing and hissing was very rude though especially as he was standing around with his mate talking. I know you would have been doing everything in your power to get the little one to sleep (and I know the perils of an overtired toddler). Hopefully other flights will be better.

We certainly feel terrible that we weren't quiet, I completely understand being upset and frustrated by it. But the loud complaining, swearing etc wasn't helping anyone. I thought I'd done the right thing heading up to the lounge with him, not realising the other pax was up there. He bolted as soon as he saw us. Then I popped downstairs to grab some extra toys and he bolted upstairs again. You can imagine how annoyed he was when we headed back up with the new toys 😂

His behaviour was awful and certainly would not have helped. His bolting up and down is a bit of Karma at least. Hope the rest of the trip goes smoothly.

The AA flight to Chicago was uneventful, exactly what we needed. No PDB but both kids were sound asleep before takeoff. Soon after we had a drinks service with the usual warm nuts, followed by lunch (chicken and mash or pasta). I managed to eat my pasta with Master TC tucked under the tray table 🤣 he woke just as I was finishing and the FA whipped the tray away quick as anything, and he went right back to sleep. The 3.5 hour flight time passed quickly.

Bags came out relatively quickly, TV took Miss TC to collect the hire car and it wasn't long before we were seeing grandma for the first time since March 2020 🤩

How wonderful for everyone - so exciting.

Our time in Chicago has been brilliant, we've seen friends we haven't seen for three years, met lots of new children, and the kids have spent a tonne of time with grandma.
We've admired all the summer flowers20220822_154108.jpg

Taken the kids to the city to see the bean and eat deep dish pizza

Eaten delicious blueberry pie ice-cream

We took the kids to a children's museum, spent lots of time at the local playground and rode the train to the city.

TV and I had an amazing kid free lunch at Gibson's Italia in the city (with an amazing chilli margarita).

But now our time has come to an end and we're heading to Hawaii.

Flagship check-in was deserted, as was security so it was a quick and easy run to the lounge.

The time seemed to go faster as the days rolled by. I'm glad we planned on a full two weeks, anything less would have been too short. As it was we definitely could have done more, but the kids spending time with grandma was the priority.
On the plus side, we've had more kid free time in two weeks than we've had in three years so that has been lovely too.

A couple of restaurants we went to in Chicago that we really enjoyed.

The family went to Fogo de Chao; first time for us and we really enjoyed it. The kids eat free which is good, they could pick and choose from the buffet. We had full access to the buffet, plus all the meat is served tableside. Both kids inhaled the pork ribs.

TV and I enjoyed a quiet and long lunch at Gibson's Italia in the city.
I had a chilli margarita to start, then we had a bottle of Napa Cabernet, bruschetta, pasta and steak (I had New York strip). Then the lovely staff surprised us with the banana gelato for dessert to celebrate our kid free lunch 🤣

An amazing meal and a restaurant I can definitely recommend.

I love my packing cubes, hope you find yours. At least you are not me who cannot find my passport! It is not in the filing cabinet, where it belongs and I haven't travelled overseas for 3 years!

Glad your trip is nearly here. I hope you all have great flights and the children travel well. So lovely for Grandma. Special times!
Did you find your passport @ellen10 ? I lost my passport years ago & turned the house upside down. Eventually found it at the bottom of a box of Xmas decorations 😳. Seems I got home from a trip, put the passport on the coffee table and then used the coffee table to help with pulling the xmas tree down and the passport got swept up with all the decorations!

No did not find my passport, searched everywhere. In the process of applying for a new one 😟. Unfortunately I have had to apply for a copy of my marriage certificate online, they no longer accept the church issued one. Over 3 weeks waiting now, so I went to service NSW today, had to ask them to escalate the issue (sigh) So when it finally arrives I will not risk the standard passport application and will have to pay an extra fee to get it quicker

Anyway, the flight from ORD to LAX was relatively uneventful. The plane had been swapped to a Dreamliner so the J seats were comfortable.

Service was a bit iffy; once the meal service was done the staff went AWOL, not even the offer of a second drink or even a water 🤷🏻‍♀️

Master TC was very restless so it wasn't the most relaxing flight but there were a number of kids in the cabin and everyone found him cute and entertaining. However I did not appreciate the mobile phone to the eye, I still have quite a bruise.

Bags came out very quickly and we were off before most people had even arrived at baggage claim.

A quick phonecall had the hotel shuttle on its way; we stayed at the nearby Embassy Suites. Because of the time change it was late for the kids so I didn't get any photos, but gee the beds were tiny. We had a twin room and the beds were so small that I chose to share with Miss TC 😂
