Liverpool

As I explained in a previous post, I never really intended to visit Liverpool. But since I was there I stayed for one night. Liverpool the home of the Beatles, and the city seems nice enough but to be honest I didn't really feel like I was missing much by leaving the next morning.

Oh, and it was really cold and blustery!

The next morning a took a train to Manchester. The train took around an hour and there were frequent departures.

Manchester

One of my favourite things to do in a city I've never been to is to take the free walking tour. As I had never been to Manchester before I did just that. We saw most of the city's highlights in about 3 hours, and learnt about some of the city's history.

The Manchester town hall:

I stayed in the Northern Quarter. There were some pretty cool bars and cafes in that neighbourhood.

My next stop was Utrecht in the Netherlands, where I stayed with a friend for a few days. The logical thing to do would be to fly into Amsterdam, but I found a very cheap Ryanair flight to Eindhoven so thought I might as well give that a go.

FR3234 Manchester - Eindhoven
Boeing 737-800
Departure time: 13:45
Arrival time: 16:00

For this flight I paid a little extra for an "up front" seat, which happened to come with priority boarding. I was one of the first onto the plane, but we still had to wait inside the airbridge for 20 minutes as they started boarding before the plane had even arrived!

The flight was fairly uneventful, but one thing I noticed was that the plane had not been cleaned properly (or at all) after the previous flight. There were crumbs on my seat and rubbish all over the floor.

Nonetheless, the flight was quite acceptable and we arrived safely and almost on-time. (We were actually 5 minutes late, but the facts didn't get in the way of another chance to play Ryanair's infamous post-landing trumpet and announce "another" on-time arrival. ;) )

The onwards trip to Utrecht took about an hour, only marginally longer than the trip from Schipol Airport in Amsterdam.

Utrecht & Amsterdam

I had a most enjoyable time in the Netherlands.

Utrecht is a lovely university town with without the big city vibe.

On one of the days we headed into Amsterdam, which is just 25 minutes away on the train.

My next stop was Budapest!

For this leg of the trip I decided to catch a train to Cologne. From there I flew to Budapest on Germanwings, an airline I've flown many times before.

I was supposed to catch an ICE train to Düsseldorf, connecting to another high-speed train bound for Cologne/Bonn Airport. The train to Düsseldorf was on-time and an enjoyable trip, but when I disembarked I discovered that the next train had actually been cancelled weeks ago. (Deutsche Bahn never bothered to tell me!) I ended up taking a local train and got to the airport 30 minutes later than I should have, but fortunately I had allowed some time for delays.

Germanwings is undergoing a brand makeover. Soon they'll be known as "Eurowings". All the check-in counters are in Eurowings colours and the staff have Eurowings uniforms. But the aircraft was still in a Germanwings livery.

During the "welcome aboard" spiel the purser welcomed us on our "Eurowings flight operated by Germanwings." So it's all a little confusing at the moment.

Airbus A319

Arrival time: 20:05

It was a Friday evening and the flight was full with a 50/50 mix of Germans going away for the weekend and business travellers.

I booked a "Smart" fare which included a "snack and drink". The snack was a small sandwich and a bag of gummi bears. (Very German!)

The crew were all friendly, except for one guy who seemed very serious and did not smile once!

The seats in the front section of the plane where I was had a substantial amount of extra leg room, so I was pretty comfortable.

We arrived on time and the flight was relatively uneventful.

I like Germanwings. They're a low-cost airline, but they do offer a decent level of service and you know what you're going to get.

Up next: A weekend in Budapest

Jeeze I love Amsterdam. Hadn't been expecting much before I went but just settled in right away. One place I would consider living if the opportunity arose. Which of course it won't.

Great report still Mattg.

Budapest

I had planned to meet with a friend on the weekend. She is currently living in Scandinavia. Now, I could have travelled to Sweden... but having done that during the middle of winter a couple of years ago, it's not an experience I was keen to repeat!

We decided on Budapest as a good place to meet and were not disappointed! We only spent a couple of days there but it was just fantastic.

OK, it turned out the weather wasn't that good anyway. The city was blanketed by a thick layer of fog on the first day. But at least the temperature remained above zero and it didn't rain!

We took two walking tours - the free city tour and the communist tour. Both were interesting but I particularly enjoyed learning about Hungary's history and politics in the communist tour.

Some of the main city sights...

This holocaust memorial is a fairly recent addition. Lining the front of the memorial were messages of protest about the perceived bias of the memorial.

01454533644.jpg

Nearby is a Soviet war memorial, which interestingly is located right outside the US embassy and a life-size statue of Ronald Reagan.

01454533734.jpg

We also ventured into the Jewish quarter.

01454533978.jpg

Near the Great Synagogue (above) was one of the many ruin bars in Budapest, Szimpla. By night it's a pretty cool bar/nightclub, but by day it's a market selling all sorts of Hungarian goodies.

01454534131.jpg

We also visited one of the largest thermal baths in Budapest, Szechenyi. It was a nice way to relax for a few hours on a cold day and a good cultural experience, although I don't think we saw any locals there. I think Hungarian people would themselves use the smaller, less touristy baths.

01454534315.jpg

I loved the Hungarian food as well! Apart from goulash, a favourite treat was Langos. This little place outside Arany János utca metro station (on line 3) was especially good.

01454534457.jpg

Speaking of the metro, it was a very easy way to get around. I bought a 72 hour pass for the metro/trams/buses and it was all I needed. It was also useful to get to and from the airport. (The airport to city trip unfortunately requires a bus and metro combination and takes about an hour, but was easy enough.)

As a way of orienting yourself, I would suggest taking a ride on tram number 2. It travels along the river giving great views across to the other side. I don't think my photo from the tram really does it justice as the weather was poor...

If you haven't been, Budapest is well worth a visit! It's inexpensive and rich in culture and history

My next stop was Lisbon, Portugal. As this was going to be a bit of a longer sector, my initial plan was to fly on a legacy carrier. But once again I ended up flying low-cost... not for the price, but out of sheer convenience.

From Budapest to Lisbon there are only two airlines flying direct. But with the TAP flight's departure time of 4am, I didn't even consider it. The other direct option was Wizz Air, a Hungarian low-cost airline. I hadn't flown them before so thought I might as well give them a go. (I did also consider indirect options but there were no reasonably-priced options with good connections that day.)

W6 2393 Budapest - Lisbon
Airbus A320
Departure time: 16:30
Arrival time: 19:25

01454536716.jpg

Before I start talking about the flight, one interesting thing that I noticed with Budapest Airport... at the security checkpoint there was a "fast track/priority" lane for elite frequent flyers. Outside this lane was a vending machine where you could actually pay 1500 HUF (about $7.50) to use the fast track lane.

Boarding for the flight was definitely a LCC experience. We didn't board from the main terminal, rather a shed used by certain low-cost airlines. And when I say shed, I mean it...

01454536788.jpg

01454536830.jpg

After having our boarding passes scanned, passengers were kept standing in a waiting area for ages until boarding actually commenced.

01454536854.jpg

Once on board, things improved greatly. The A320 aircraft was immaculately clean and seemed brand new. There was no in-flight entertainment but that was to be expected. The leather seats were sufficiently comfortable. I paid extra to sit in 1A and found the legroom adequate. I can't comment on the other rows but would imagine it would be the same as on any other low-cost airline.

The flight attendants were all young, but professional and friendly. All cabin announcements were made in English first and then Hungarian.

After take-off the first of two meal services commenced. The second was completed an hour before landing. I purchased dinner, and was satisfied with a chicken baguette, beer and nuts for €8 (by airline food standards, anyway).

01454537259.jpg

The flight was absolutely fine, and exceeded expectations. My only criticism was that there was a group of obviously first-time flyers in the rows behind me that made a lot of noise throughout the flight. But that's hardly the airline's fault and nothing that my noise-cancelling headphones couldn't fix.

Just one other tiny thing: when we landed, the flight attendant announced that the local time was 8.25pm. It was actually an hour earlier than that due to the time zone change. But let's be honest, I'm nitpicking here.

Overall the flight was absolutely fine and I'd be happy to fly Wizz Air again. And considering their growing presence in eastern Europe and very low fares, it's quite likely that I will at some point.

I haven't been to Budapest but its on the list.
Moved a little higher now I think.
Enjoying your trip report.

My next stop was Utrecht in the Netherlands, where I stayed with a friend for a few days.

Just as an aside I had my birthday last March in Utrecht but the small town in KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa about 50km from Newcastle. Enjoying the read as always Mattg. Cheers CM

I was picking up the next long-haul leg of my trip from Singapore. I'd allowed myself a day to get there, so the following afternoon I jumped on another flight for the 1 hour trip south.

Again, I just used a low-cost airline for this trip. I used a Jetstar Price Beat to get a ticket to Singapore for around $20.

The flight was entirely uneventful. It ran on-time, the FAs were friendly... No complaints from me.

When landing in Singapore there were certainly a lot of ships on the harbour:

Only just hopped on board. this is interesting.

TR is going well...

Been to several of these places over the years, yes was impressed with Edinburgh as it wasn't as dour and cold as i was expecting and quite a few things to see,
BUD was a slight bit of a disappointment to me when i was ther ein 2008 perhaps in the Summer it would've been a bit more lively
Manchester wasn't too bad, i took the bus from EDI to MAN which was ok and pretty cheap, did a tour of Man U's Old Trafford stadium..

And yes Ryan Air is very cheap and you are bombarded with tacky offers for everything but it gets you from A to B...

yes walking tours are a great way to see a new city plus places you have been before...

Meaning to go to Lisbon sometime, only been to Porto in Portugal so interested to see what its like...

I did a short trip to Portugal & Spain this time last year, visiting Porto and Barcelona respectively. Having enjoyed both destinations, I decided to this time visit the two capital cities - Lisbon and Madrid.

I had around two days in each city. It wasn't really enough time, but I enjoyed the time I did spend in both places.

Lisbon

Lisbon is a great city with a beautiful "old town" in the Alfama district. Lots to see and do.
