So you were at Lyttleton? I understand it was closed to cruise ships for a number of years and ships had to use Akaroa (we did I remember). I didn't realise it was open again, though possibly for small ships only.
It is Port Chalmers near Christchurch that is closed to larger cruise ships. They must anchor off Akaroa and tender in.The locals there are trying to get that banned.
We used Port Chalmers and they are building a new cruise ship wharf there.

Yes think that’s right as it’s been a while since we’ve been there. The brain cells aren’t as sharp as they used to be.

So to Dunedin. You can see the weather gods are at last being very kind to us.We wandered around town with some retail therapy for mrsdrron whilst I took some shots of interesting buildings.

On the top floor of the station there is a New Zealand Sports Museum and a gallery run by a local artist's group. We liked some of the paintings.

There is a train that does regular 3 hour trips along the coast. However if we had gone on this one a strong possibility that we would miss the last shuttle back to the ship.

On the way back to the CBD we stopped at the Best Restaurant-a fish and chips place again in the hands of the family that started it 92 years ago.I had the blue cod with a whitebait pattie.Mrsdrron had the monkfish.

The fish was perfectly cooked as were the chips. The whitebait pattie was disappointing.Said to be the same recipe as 92 years ago but my memories of 50 years ago were of a lot more whitebait.
I washed mine down with a beer from Invercargill.

L-t-L - he has confused you! Port Chalmers is the port at Dunedin, which seems to have been this stop.

Lyttelton Harbour (not called Port) is over the Port Hills from Christchurch. Cruise ships have been anchoring at Akaroa - and when there are multiple ships in port, the little town is overwhelmed. It’s nearly 90mins drive on winding narrow roads from Akaroa to Christchurch.

Locals avoid Akaroa like the plague during cruise season.

Oh thank you - had I thought properly I would have realised Port Chalmers is the port for Dunedin (as I have been there before). I got confused  As I said the brain ain't as quick as it once was. When drron said Lyttleton I assumed he was talking about the harbour near Christchurch. I agree that Akaroa would be awful in cruise season - I've been a couple of times but only once by ship and the town was overrun on that occasion, and lovely on the other.

It is a lovely place! My grandfather was postmaster there for awhile, and I am a direct descendent of one of the founding families (off the first ships). As I was at Uni in Christchurch I spent many weekends there too. So it’s a place close to my heart!

Um there are a few spelling mistakes in the intro of your thread...... Was this intentional?

Those petunias at Dunedin remind me of my mother’s garden when I was young. They always gave a great splash of colour in summer. Will be in NZ next week for a few days so will be keen to see if the summer flowers are still out.
