Inspired somewhat by @Justinf and his road trip I decided do a belated report on little road trip we did a few months back. Our trip was nothing of the magnitude undertaken by @Justinf, only covering about 450 klms over two days. The trip was based around re visiting places I hadn't been to for many years, and sampling local country bakeries, food and wine! See .pdf below for map of our trip.

We departed from Marcus Beach earlyish with the first stop at the Yowie Coffee Kiosk in Kilcoy for coffee. I forgot to take a photo so have included a stock photo from their website. They make a good coffee and worth a stop.

Arriving in Blackbutt we met our friends at the bakery for morning tea. This place gets really goods reviews (particularly the pies) and our son had also been there and recommended it.

As always I forget to take a photo until I’m halfway through! We had a combination of a sticky date muffin, jam and cream donut and Gaytime slice (like the ice cream). Donut and slice were good, muffin OK. Friends also had a pie and said it was delicious.

Our next stop was Goomeri via Nanango, Kingaroy, Murgon etc. For those of you who are of a similar vintage to me, you would remember Kingaroy as not only the home of peanuts but also the home of our one time illustrious (controversial) premier Joh Bjelke Petersen and his wife Flo, who was known for her pumpkin scones. Murgon also brings back memories of me playing a game of rugby union there in my 20’s. There was also a Charlie Renouf in the team who was either Steve Renouf's brother or cousin. Can't remember which but I do remember he was talented and fast.

Coming in to Kingaroy and the Bega factory plus some photos from the lookout.

A quick detour through Wondai…

And then on to Goomeri..

And lunch at the bakery plus I purchased some of the (sort of) local condiments.

I had the lamb and rosemary pie which was good but their pastries etc are really good 😋.

Our final destination for the day is Dusty Hill Winery which is about 23 klms south of Goomeri. The winery has various stand alone accommodation plus recently opened motel style accommodation. There is also a tavern, wine tasting, chefs pantry and an in construction brewery.

Our lodging for the night was the Sewing Cottage. This place is very popular so booking in advance is a must.

Afternoon drinks were in order before dinner at the tavern. We again caught up with our friends who were staying in their van on a property next door. We then did a wine tasting of their reds which were surprisingly good. We ended up buying some of their sparkling Shiraz and our friends bought some of their reds. Meals were huge and very good. I had the bangers and mash which was a bit of an upmarket version.

Breakfast was provided by way of bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomato and local sourdough which you cooked yourself. There was also cereals and milk provided. We decided not to cook (but did take the food with us 😜) and instead headed back to Goomeri for a bakery brekky.

Our last stop on our way back home was at Kilkivan butcher to buy some house cured bacon 🥓😋.

All in all a great little trip and will definitely be going back to Dusty Hill Winery. For me this place is a winter destination with the fireplace, and I would stay a couple of nights. There are other Winery’s in the general area and I would look to visit them to sample their wines. Clovely Estate Winery is just up the road and the lady doing the wine tasting at at Dusty Hill said that their wines are probably better.

Thanks for the TR @Scash . Brings back memories of the years I spent providing an Outreach Service to the Upper Burnett hospitals and GPs - Gayndah, Eidsvold, Mundubbera, Monto and Biggenden.
Drove through Kilkivan and Goomeri many times with a few stops at the bakeries.

This is my brother-in-law's idea of heaven - a road trip that involves lots of pies at country bakeries (all of which claim to have the BEST pie around), and tastings at local wineries. I think you would get on like a house on fire!

Mr Seat 0A is retired, and I am now all but retired and we are looking forward to doing that sort of road trip ourselves.
