A quickie in Manila

Sounds like an urban myth to me, Manila ain't the "wild west".
Having been to them all I feel much safer wandering around the city and markets in manila than Bangkok, KL, Denpasar or Jakarta
Made the front page of the local papers, was on the TV and the General who organised it disappeared-believed to have fled the country-this was the 90's though.
Having just wandered the streets of KL and Bangkok I would have to disagree.

The 90's!! Is hardly a "few years ago" - No wonder I couldnt find anything on Google - it was probably pre- internet.
If it was a General then it wasn't the Police!
The fact the "General" fled, suggests that he was a renegade! and not an officially sanctioned job.

Comparing 2 trips ten years apart is harldy a reliable testimony.

Mate when you are in your 60's the 90's are only a few years ago.The Phillipines isnt the only country in the world where the police use military designations for their officers-presumably makes them feel more important.
I have been in Fiji within 2 weeks of 2 of their coups and a week after a coup in Thailand in the 80's-none of those disturbed me at all.In Manilla I felt unsafe-usually when police or military were around. That is just my experience, others may well take it differently but we all can only tell it as we see it.

Interesting trip report.

Manila has been on my list of places to visit but I may wait until I have a travel companion or at least a local with me for the trip.

I suspect that I'm getting a reputation around here.....
At least it is not a bad reputation. Those famous feet shots could well become a fixture at future Ozfests and other DOs since Mal and myself introduced them at Ozfest V in Hobart....
