Is there any way when booking online of finding out if a hotel uses a real king bed as opposed to two singles pushed/zipped together? And is it possible to request one, assuming the hotel does have a real king bed?

What prompted this question is that with my recent stay at Hilton Taupo, I was disappointed to find that it was two singles making up the king bed in the standard room.

Tripadvisor might give some clues, and I do note it occasionally when I review hotels. At some hotels though it could only be some rooms where it happens, certainly I wouldn't expect it normal behaviours at a Hilton.

Personally I hate it. Some places do it much better than others, but the lump is nearly always easy to feel and one mattress will sag more than the other.

This is one of my pet peeves as well :( akin to false advertising in my mind.

It certainly does happen at quite a few Hiltons-especially Europe.Have had it also in the USA at HIs and HGIs.Newer HGIs though appear to have only the regular king-these are slightly smaller rooms and come with shower only.The 2 bedded rooms are larger and have a tub.
Also happens at SPG hotels-again mainly in Europe.
From the hotels point of view it gives them flexibility-ie if a large number of bookings for 2 bedded rooms then it can easily be accomadated.

How would you know you have the big half of the bed if there isn't the two halves??
Of course I am joking!

Yep- I agree. Hilton is actually particularly bad with this in my eyes, and they will NEVER tell you on their web site or when calling the hotel... Stayed at the Hilton resort in Fiji just before Christmas and sure enough, it was one of those annoying two single beds tied together. The hotel actually kept insisting that it was "clearly a King size bed, Sir" which gives you an idea about their thinking on the matter :evil:

Whenever we strike the two singles zipped and can feel the join, I ring the font desk ask for the manager on duty and tell him that it's uncomfortable. So far we have always been moved, usually to an upgraded room etc;

My reasoning is, unless guests tell them, they don't know the bed is suffering from wear ( a good join should not be felt by the guest) and nothing will get changed/improved.

The easiest way I've found is to look at the other configuration for your room type when booking.

If there's a room available as "Two Singles" then the "King" will often be them pushed together.

If it's "Two Queen", then the "King" will usually be a real bed.
