Hi All,

Being one who is mainly confined to 738s, I had the "pleasure" of flying A332 VH-EBB (according to Qantassource) last week.

I was surprised to see the IFE being supplied via drop-downs - despite the iPad strap on the back of the headrest of the seat in front.
What's the mix of the Panasonic (?) IFE and the ahem older IFE on these birds?

Regards,

BD

AFAIK, out of the 16 A332s:

  • 3 are without any setback IFE (EBB to EBD);
  • 4 are fitted with the older Rockwell Collins IFE system (EBG to EBI and EBL);
  • 8 are fitted with the newer Panasonic IFE system (EBM to EBS, EBV)
  • 1 is fitted with Wifi IFE (EBA)

EBJ is currently being reconfigured and it was (previously) fitted with the Rockwell Collins system. One more A332 is due to be returned from JQ and it is likely that it will also have the Rockwell Collins system.

IIRC correctly, EBJ definitely did not have the RC system, nor will the other returning 332 from JQ.
It definitely did not have seat back IFE when it was with QF originally.

Beautiful. More of QF's famed consistent inconsistency!!

But they are working on fixing this (I.e every 332 having some form of personal IFE)

Yes mannej they *are* working to fix this ... and once fixed, QF would never sub a dom A332 with an internationally configured A333, would they??

Until

Believe it or not, a domestic 332 has completed the PER-SIN run a handful of times.

Once the refurb program is complete I don't see what the issue is.

This is only a temporary situation for EBB-EBD as they had to come back to Qantas before they were ready to commence the A330 retrofit. J has iPads supplied at each seat but Y only has the main screens as no iPads are provided. When I flew on EBB last year, you couldn't connect to the Wifi using your own device either but I'm not sure if that's now changed.

I am guessing that from now on, as EBE, EBF and EBK come back from JQ, they will go straight in for their retrofit, and as such, we can hope that this situation will only be confined to those three birds.

I am certain that EBJ and EBK did have the Rockwell Collins system fitted, but not connected, certainly not down the back, not sure up front. It was delviered amongst the 4 international configured -200's, so it and -EBK are a bit of an odd ones out compared to the rest of the aircraft that ended up at Jetstar. Have a look at the pics in the trip report below, where the guy has taken a picture of an IFE box in Y, but no screen.

But getting back to what the plan is, any that have Rockwell Collins, or no seat back IFE fitted will have Panasonic system, fixed screens in J and I beleive BYO streaming down the back. This includes the 4 that are currently international configured.

Those with Panasonic fitted will have the system upgraded with new screens in J (obviously as new seats) plus old fixed seats down the back.

And for fullness the -300's new seats and system all round, including down the back, plus BYO streaming.

Those a/c returning from Jetstar that are yet to be reconfigured will have what ever system was in them. So for the early units it is main screen only, up front it is iPADs, but think they are pre-loaded rather than streaming.

PS tried BYO streaming on a 717 the other day and was reasonably impressed. Only thing I hated is if you locked the screen on the iPhone the streaming app would stop and had to be restarted again from scrach (i was listening to audio not watching a video).
