A380 in Y - best seats (80A/80K/71D/50C etc.)

I may be able to advise in a months time; we are on 388 flights SIN to/from LHR. Currently allocated to 50B/C both ways. (It depends If the upgrade requests comes through or not.)

(Originally booked 80A/B there and 80J/K back, but was firmly advised by SWMBO that bulkhead is 'the go'. So I 'moved' us! :shock:)

I have travelled quite a few times in 50C and 51H and here are my pro's and con's list:

Pro:

  • Great access to get on and off the plane - especially when looking for that shower in SIN and the dash to passport control in LHR;
  • Very little foot traffic with the crew really being the only ones going through;
  • First selection of meals;
  • Bulkhead good for putting the feet up on if you want elevation for resting & sleeping.
  • Easy access to and from seats - reasonable space between bulkhead and seat.

Cons or items to consider:

  • Get on-board early as the bins can fill up quickly in this area - especially if a family is using the bassinet positions;
  • Can at times be noisy with children in bassinet position (but as a parent myself i just feel for the families... well most times ;))
  • Must stow all items during takeoff and landing;
  • Take a book/magazine, as the IFE cannot be watched during takeover and landing unlike other seats due to it being in-arm;
  • After being in this seat many times i still cannot find the power point for charging my laptop - (have read its in the gap left by the IFE, but cant confirm);
  • No foot net to elevate feet - most underused item in seats on the QF388 IMHO;
  • Take earplugs as the Crew can be heard easily during lights out when people are sleeping - Biggest negative of the seat for me, but might not apply for non-aisle seats.
Hope it helps.

I'm not known to question the ruling of SWMBO. However, would the proximity to the self-serve bar be an issue in this location?

The 'self service' bar near 80A or 80K? There is¹ one behind row 77C and another behind 77H; you certainly don't get people hanging around these. The main one is right at the back. These are all more a self-serve area to grab soft drinks/small nibbles rather than bars.

There are none of these near row 50.

¹ I note the qantas.com .pdf seatmap for the 388 has been modified and the mention of "Bar" removed from the areas I referred to above.

What about row 66 & 81?

I'm on QF9 on 17/5 and see 66E/F/G + 81E/F/G as blocked out on EF. 66 is meant to have additional legroom.

66 A/B/C and H/J/K are designated exit row seats. D/E/F/G are generally blocked for those with Higher status/needs than mere WP. They all have great leg room.

81D/E/F/G are designated bassinet positions.

Plenty of leg room, but be prepared to cough up the $$$$

66EFG would be the pick of the bulkheads given that there is no galley in front - only toilets and a crew rest area access. Of course the downside is being further back in the plane.

66A-C and H-K are also very good. Just be mindful that people tend to stretch their legs in the emergency exits.

52 D-G are also very good and I have found them to not get as much noise as 50 A-C and 51 H-K.

Do these seats free up at T-80 for us WP plebs? ;) Or is there a chance I can approach a dom J lounge dragon when I'm on my travels this week to see if they could free it up for me?

You'll generally need to pay for 66A/B/C/D/E/F being designated exit seats.

I have not seen 66D/E/F/G open up for allocation in recent times. I have tried to pre-allocate as a WP but was denied.

I have seen them allocated several month out. I suspect CL get them.

I've been auto-allocated 66D when booking at T-14 (I think from memory) and T-3 (for both outgoing and return) as PS and SG. I thought it curious that I'd be allocated them (and not a WP / CL), so I 'moved' myself - once out of the seat I couldn't move myself back into it, so I just closed the IE window without confirming - so, jury is still out as to whether I should get those seats or not...

I still prefer 80A / K, purely as that rear cabin is by far the quietest Y cabin.

V happy with 80A on a recent trip, MEL/SIN.

Although, 80B/C which had been blocked for my flying comfort, were hi jacked by a young couple who did not like their allocated middle seats. CSM apologised profusely and lavishly compensated me for the "inconvenience" with F pj's and champagne. Seat hi jackers were green with envy!

Curious as to how one goes about discreetly bringing this up with the CSM in the presence of the seat stealers?

Also, how does one go about ensuring adjacent seats are blocked? I thought it was just a random altea thing?

I would have thought the csm should "compensate" you by moving them back to their assigned seating!

Seat 80K on the new A380 QF

Dammit :(

I was eyeing these off as my alternative to 80A/K.
I'm happy to pay as well. 66 looked quite good.

When I checked in at the FLounge, the Concierge offered to block the seats. When I left the FLounge to board, I checked to see if the seats were still blocked.

I rasied the issue of the "interlopers" - in an amusing way - in discussion with a very chatty CSM. The CSM must have spent about 30 minutes or so chatting, then returned with the goodies. I was asked several times if I wanted another champagne. After an excellent lunch in the FLounge, I just couldn't!:shock:

I did think about that ... but didn't ask. No point really; I was quite comfortable, or as comfy as one could be in whY. In any event, the armrest was fixed and couldn't be raised.

Still quite numb (in a good way) from the FLounge catering!

Hi.

I just wanted to add that it's possible to sleep in this row if you're lucky enough to have seats blocked out for you. It requires some flexibility but you can curl your legs either around or over the fixed arm rest. It's better than nothing. :)

Thanks for the heads up, I was able to secure 80K there and 71D back for MEL-LAX in July. I've flown many 747 legs but this is my first A380.
