American Airlines, Jetstar sign codeshare, interline agreement

Thursday, 14 October 2010

Qantas’ budget airline Jetstar has teamed up with airline giant American Airlines, signing an interline and codeshare agreement set to boost access across New Zealand destinations.
Under the codeshare relationship American Airlines will place its AA code on Jetstar flights from Auckland to Christchurch, Queenstown and Wellington, and from Christchurch to Queenstown and Wellington.
According to a statement released on the New York Stock Exchange last night, an interline agreement between Jetstar and American Airlines will likely deliver “enhanced customer access for customers to or from the United States across Jetstar's growing Australian and New Zealand flight networks, now totaling more than 20 destinations”.
"The relationship…will add significant value for our customers travelling throughout New Zealand," American Airlines chief commercial officer Virasb Vahidi said, adding he was “very pleased” with the agreement.
Jetstar, too were happy, Group chief executive Bruce Buchanan saying, "Our proposed codeshare agreement with American Airlines will enable its customers to combine travel on Jetstar, American Airlines and other codeshare carriers such as Qantas as part of a single booking," Buchanan said.
"As the second largest airline in New Zealand and the fastest growing in our core Australian market, customers of American Airlines will gain even greater flexibility, convenience and choice of destinations when traveling to or within both countries."
American Airline's AAdvantage(R) member awill be able to earn mileage credit on all American-marketed flights as will Jetstar flights marketed under the Qantas (QF) code.
American Airlines already has a codeshare agreement with its oneworld partner and Jetstar parent, Qantas.

That’s interesting, while their product will still suck, AA might start earning more milage than QF on JQ :p I wonder if QFF’s will be able to earn on the AA codeshares too :D

Interesting, they can earn on JQ flights with QF codes (where QFF currently cannot). It's good that we can at least earn something for the JQ non jetflex fares now, even if having to credit to AA.

Though you are unlikely to be able to book the AA code unless in conjunction with an AA coded flight arrival into NZ. From my reading of the article, AAdvantage members will only earn miles if using the AA or QF codeshare flight numbers and not when using JQ flight numbers.

I know, that's why I mentioned JQ flights on QF codes.

QFF members on QF codes will earn a minimum 1000 QF FF points (with the usual eligible flight limitation for any QF flight). So still likely to be better for a QFF member to earn to QFF account if using a QF flight number operated by JQ.

But is that not only on JetFlex fares, whereas with AA it will earn on JetSaver?

JetFlex and JetSaver only relates to JQ flight codes. If buying the QF flight code (when available), the fare is a QF fare and not a JQ fare. So a QF fare will have a QF fare name, such as Red-e-Deal, FlexiSaver etc.

Well, yes ; but they correlate to the JQ fares. So for example when purchasing a QF codeshare on a JQ flight as a Super Saver it would be best to credit to AA as with QFF it will earn nothing (as it stands right now......).

That’s how I understand it too, doesn’t matter if it’s a QF codeshare as if it books into a JetSaver fare (not a more expensive JetFlex), you get nothing. Unless I’ve always misunderstood and you’re (NM) saying you can earn on these fares?

But can you buy the QF codeshare on JQ.I know my JQ flights to MCY have a QF codeshare but i cant access this whether I buy the JQ flight on JQ or QF website. Is it just for award redemptions and international connections.
If I can earn AA miles i will certainly switch some flights to JQ.I would rather though be able to check my bag through when connecting to or from JQ.

Good point. Even buying the JQ flights on the QF website books on the JQ code rather than the QF. It seems the only way to get the QF number on a JQ flight is via an international connection.

But note the rule:

Points and Status Credits are not earned on Qantas codeshare flights (ie flights with a QF flight number) operated by Jetstar other than in Economy classes of B, H, K or Y.

I think the main issue here is that you generally cannot purchase a QF flight number on a JQ flight, except as a QFF award flight (so non earning anyway) or part of an international connection.

Either way, I certainly expect the AA codeshares to only be sold in conjunction with an AA international flight number arrival/departure.

I know FuzzyNoE was telling me he got credited ff points to his LAN Pass membership on a QF codeshare flight SIN/DRW/SIN operated by JQ as part of a QF economy fare ex LHR to Oz & back however I don't know whether the booking classes were B H K or Y.

It would appear that it's more likely see QF codeshare flights (operated by JQ) for sale on international sectors more than domestic.
