Can anyone tell me their experience of how long this took to go through?

I made a points booking on the 12th of December but still showing as On Request today.

Took a day or two for me.

When making the reservation on-line at aa.com, I have had the confirmation within 24 hours. It may take a little longer depending on the time/day and timezones. When making the booking on the phone with AAdvantage desk in USA, again less than 24 hours and in many cases the ticket is issued when I am still on the call.

Rang AA yesterday and they just said these things take time. (a PFO ...basically)

Should I try Qantas to see if there is a hold up on it or something?
A week seems along time now.

Qantas will just refer you back to AA as they are the ticketing body.

I also tried to buy pojnts on the 12th Dec, but neither the points or the cost to my card went through despite the AA website giving me a thumbs up. Emailed AA, they replied after a week saying my card had not been charged and i need to try again. My bank (citibank) has the worlds longest hold queue so i gave up after 45 minutes, but it hasnt shown on my ststement so the AA people must have been right.
I then tried to buy points a few days ago and it went straight in after a day or two.
Stupid AA website.

Might have been the 14 days thing?

Update on this is I called them yesterday ad they told me "these things usually take anywhere up to 24 hours"
Then she checked when I had paid the booking and checked a bit further.
Said she did not understand the message on the booking so went to find someone who did.
On hold for 10 minutes and then ticketed.

Seems there was an issue with it going through automatically but no notification for anyone to look into it.
