ITA Airways has ended it's membership with Skyteam and will be integrated in the Lufthansa group

From Skyteam

AMSTERDAM, 3 February 2025 – ITA Airways has ended its membership in the SkyTeam Alliance.

SkyTeam, its member airlines and ITA Airways are working closely together to ensure a smooth transition for customers and partners during the exit phase, which concludes by 30 April 2025.

From the LH Press release:

Integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group has commenced

  • With immediate effect: Miles for Miles & More members with ITA Airways and points for Volare members with the Lufthansa Group's network airlines
  • From 30 March: ITA Airways will move into Terminal 1 in Frankfurt and into Terminal 2 in Munich
  • From 30 March: mutual lounge access
  • From 30 March: 100 code shares connections and coordinated European flight schedule
  • ITA Airways leaves SkyTeam

Change of airline alliance: In the future, ITA Airways passengers will also be able to take advantage of all the product benefits of the Lufthansa Group. The Italian airline's admission to Star Alliance, the biggest global aviation alliance, is of crucial importance for this. Preparations have already begun. ITA Airways' official accession to the Star Alliance is planned for the first half of 2026. Accordingly, ITA Airways already initiated the withdrawal from the SkyTeam alliance.

Nice that they've given lots of notice that my ITA Airways status will no longer be recognised by other SkyTeam airlines. (To the extent it was recognised last week, anyway.)

Well it's totally destroyed any benefit I might have received from my Volare status, as I'm already Star Gold for Life with UA. So Bah...

From my couple of flights with AZ in Europe, they weren't a bad airline at all (in terms of Euro style business class). Maybe I'll catch up with them again in their new *A guise.

Does it mean the Volare Premium status will be recognized by likes SQ/AF or JAL in the near future ? Have an upcoming travel plan for Mar 2025 with SQ , will be good to know how it pans out for the Star alliance flights. ta

Don't think they'll be formerly recognised by SQ or any Star Alliance members (with the exception of those already partnered with AZ, or the upcoming LH group carrier integration) until AZ gets the formal approval to join *A sometime in 2026.

including ANA in due course, but not JAL (part of OW).

The FAQs seem to suggest that they'll maintain 10 existing bilateral partnerships beyond the SkyTeam exit and before joining Star - so broadly speaking, my impression is that:
- Pre Feb 2025: full (patchy) SkyTeam recognition
- Feb to Apr 2025: progressive loss of recognition from SkyTeam members except for the bilateral partners + LH group
- Apr to Dec 2025: bilateral partnerships + LH group only
- 2026: who knows

Edit: just for easy reference, the 10 bilateral partners are:
Aerolineas Argentinas
Aeromexico
AirEuropa
Air France
Delta
KLM
Korean Air
Middle East Airlines
Virgin Atlantic
Saudia
