Just wondering how partner awards work in terms of what you can and can't do with routing.

In particular, do you have to take the most direct routing? Or can you go via other points as long as it's not a stopover?

Thanks

There are slightly different rules depending on whether the award includes North America

if not in North America , then as long as no stopovers then you can go via other points as long as no stopover

e.g. PER-MEL-SYD outbound SYD-CNS-AYQ-PER inbound would be valid as an award for PER-SYD r/t

Hmm - I got "stung" as I have to overnight (<24 hours) in HKG - first available seat bu not first available flight (I could have paid for a flight at 9AM but only seat at 6PM). Didnt quite work for me...

When I've booked in the past they have mentioned this "next available flight" rule. The frustrating thing is that if there is an economy seat on the next available flight, it seems you must take it - even if you're booking business or first class.

What I would like to book is NRT-HKG-SIN-SYD - all without a stopover. Not sure if it can be done.

It doesn't have to be next available flight necessarily, but does normally have to be within 6 hours ; if no flight within that time frame then has to be within 24 hours

Does it all have to be in the same region, or in theory, could you do:

NRT-HKG-LHR-SIN-SYD ??

With an intra-region award, you cannot go into a second region; what you are suggesting would be an OW Award

With an inter-region award, in most cases you cannot enter a 3rd region but there are some exceptions; e.g. for Europe-South Pacific you may pass through HKG,NRT,SIN or BKK
