BNE is over 800 miles closer to YVR than MEL, which from what I heard might be pushing the 778 a little too far (at least if AC wants to avoid semi regular stops at Fiji a la the old QF8). When AC get the 789, a MEL service might be more realistic.

I feel like I read something from the AC CEO along those lines. As in they want MEL as a destination but don't quite have the correct aircraft.

SAS have a lounge in BNE now?

They have 777LR aircraft but they must be committed. Getting to YVR remains a PITA for MEL travellers. Via AKL on NZ might still be the best option, straight out from international and no terminal transfer. Not sure if connection is still good at AKL.

Don't quite have the right bilateral.

Australia-Canada air services agreement allows 3000 seats/week for each side between SYD + one other Australian port and YVR + one other Canadian port.
AC 77L 270 seats *7 = 1890 seats used for YVR-SYD
AC 788 251 seats *7 = 1757 for daily YVR-BNE
1 daily 77L + 1 daily 788 = 3647 seats/week.
While keeping a daily 77L on SYD, without changes to the air services agreement, AC can only do 4 YVR-BNE 788 flights/week.
