ACCC having a look at competition or lack of it

"A4ANZ chief executive Alison Roberts warned policies to support passengers could have "unintended consequences", saying the cost of schemes overseas has pushed airfare prices higher."

I like to see the evidence for that.....
…in that case, just hang around a while, and if foreign State owned and subsidised airlines (such as Qatar, Emirates, Etihad) get the green light to plunder your local population, you will probably get evidence of “unintended consequences” in abundance.

Show me the evidence for higher airfares?

exactly. no doubt they will show one way last minute business and full flex economy fares to prove their point! But for the leisure traveller the bargains are still there. that hasn’t changed in 30 years.

Yes it has. Much cheaper in real and occasionally nominal terms than 30 years ago. I looked at some old tickets recently - $239 in 1994 for return MEL-SYD, advance purchase, Saturday night away fare etc etc. About $490 adjusted for inflation. Sale fare in 1995 SYD-BNE, $149 return, very rare sale fare, very restricted. That's $291 adjusted for inflation.

In the aussie market yes, cheaper. I was referencing the European market. The cheap fares were there 30 years ago, and are still there today. Eu261 hasn’t seen a dramatic increase in prices.
