Accommodation in Germany & Amsterdam advice

Hi Myself, wife and 12 year old son are flying to Germany in September for 6 weeks
we land in Frankfurt so will probably spend a couple of days there then my plan is to travel by rail (advice on this would also be appreciated) Switzerland ( maybe) Amsterdam- Hamberg - Berlin- Munich most of the time being spent in Hamburg and Berlin. will also be looking at a couple of other places as we research
possibly a plane to Iceland for several days.
any advice would be much appreciated on Hotel, air B&B suggestions, or any advice as this is our first time there.
I guess on average would be looking at $200 per night or less for accommodation budget

I can't give any advice on Amsterdam nor Iceland but we have traveled extensively in Germany over the last 15 years. We have never had a problem finding accommodation, just don't leave it too late in the evening to find somewhere.

Never used an airbnb, so I can't advise on that either, there is no shortage of Gasthäuser or Pensions and generally they offer good value for money, again imo. All towns will have some sort of accommodation available.

Renting a car in Germany is easy, driving is easy, if you want to explore smaller towns and villages, this is imo the best way to do it. If you just want major cities and there is a lot to see in places like Berlin then train travel would probably be fine.

I have friends that plan every trip to Europe that they do, they book every nights accommodation and so on. That's fine if that's want you want to do, and I can see the benefits in doing that.

Also it really depends on what you want to see, Berlin could occupy you for a week not including going to Potsdam etc. Train travel is fast, so you could also base yourself in Berlin for example and make day trips to other places that may be of interest,eg, Leipzig and Dresden

For Amsterdam look into QO Amsterdam which is just outside the city and rooms are available under $200. It's on a metro line so easy to get into town. Another place I recommend is The Concert Hotel in the Museum district. Simple rooms but great location and the airport bus stop is just out the front. I have stayed at both and an intending to stay at The Concert Hotel again when I travel there in Sept this year. Although not showing availability for the dates I want at this stage..hopefully it will have availability for when you go.

As others have mentioned, I too recommend Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber. It's a great town.
