Hi everyone,

I'm looking at accommodation in New York from in 24 august, out 28 august. I am thinking around Times Square because it's my daughter (15) and I and my friend stayed there and found it easy to walk everywhere and felt safe at night due to so many people around.

I'm torn between...............

(a) ridiculously expensive in Times Square (and many people say noisy) e.g. my friend stayed at manhattan on times square

(b) budget but central e.g. another friend recommended Seafarers International

(c) nice accommodation but further away.

Firstly, I'm having trouble gauging distances when I look at the New York Map. I mean, if I stay around the top end on central park, can I walk to around empire state building etc or is that miles and miles away?

Secondly, the reason I was thinking of times square is that, if my daughter and i stay out late at night (say we're coming back from Empire STate Building around midnight), are we better off being able to walk to hotel around the busy streets of manhattan area as opposed to jumping onto subway or train to get to somewhere further out?

I'm mainly thinking about the short time frame (i.e. don't want to be training in every day from Brooklyn etc), the safety issue (i.e. I'm worried about having to go too far out on public transport late at night), and finding a reasonable price.

Does anyone have any recent comments on particular hotels?
As an indication I can get Seafarers International for around $1000 AUD and Manhatton at Times Square for $1500 AUD (approx. $1200 USD)! I am looking at 'free cancellation' prices at this stage.

Can anyone give me advice please on accommodation and does anyone have recent experience to share with regards to accommodation in New York and best place for mother/daughter 4-5 days.

I would not go any more than 1500aud and I doubt I would even pay that so any advice below that price point would be very helpful.

Does anyone have any comments on airbnb?

Thanks so much.

Have a look at Row NYC. I stayed there with my mum last year. Its one block behind Time Square and metres from the Subway. Recently renovated, has a great bar in the lobby (awesome pizza). Got free drinks on arrival and a free breakfast.

We stayed with our adult daughter at the Hilton Times Square North, easy walk to Times Square, close to subway. Large rooms and they will give you a mini fridge if you ask, over the road from a supermarket and wine shop. Breakfast was included as were cookies and coffee downstairs.

And I've stayed at
[h=2]Hilton Garden Inn New York/Central Park South-Midtown West

Which is close to Times Sq but not too close.

Also, be aware of any sporting events that may be in the area. If these occur then prices can skyrocket.

Definitely not a short walk from top of Central Park to Empire State

Subway is fun though and very safe these days

I havent been to NYC yet, but its on the list. But from what ive been told some friends ect, they try to avoid being right in times square. they go a little out but no to far, but close to a subway station. cause its a big place to try and walk.

Also Airbnb is great, read reviews of the places obviously, but everyone i know who has used it has loved it

Midtown and Chelsea all good areas as well, within walking distance of Times Square, Empire State, and very easy to access multiple subway lines. Or even Soho. Downtown is also OK, although subway ride away from main areas its only 10 mins if you catch express train rather than a "local".

Are you a member of an Automobile Association (RACV, NRMA etc)? If so you can book Hilton chain properties - that are on cancellable rates for reasonable prices. For example Hilton Fashion District, on 26th Street, for about $1400 AUD cancellable up to day prior.

I like your thinking with cancellable rates too, from my experience in the last few weeks before stay the prices can move both up and down depending on demand (I've seen properties drop from $240/night to $150/night in a matter of days). A cancellable rate has you covered.

Good information also in another thread: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....nation-guide/ten-days-new-york-too-60408.html

thanks everyone,
any recommendations a touch more towards the budget side?
the only one that's come within my limit so far is Row NYC.
they are all beautiful really getting up there in price.
so far Row NYc and Seafarers are between 900-1200 AUD ( 850 USD).

When I was in NYC last year we stayed in an apartment.

www.ten15nyc.com

Great location and reasonably priced. They offer studios, 1 and 2 bedroom apartments.

My wife and I stayed at Novotel Times Square a couple of years ago. It was quiet and not far from TS and reasonable at the time. The lobby bar was a good cheap eats option. I'd stay there again.

The Warwick close by was nicer but prob too expensive.

Good luck

member of RAC in western australia, will look into that, thanks.

On Hilton website, click "Add Special Rate Code" and tick AAA, that will help search for prices. Frpm memory when making the actual booking you have to enter card number (however long that is) or 3/4 digit club code.

On Hotels.com you can get lots of hotels in that price range (fully cancellable). My pick would be Sixty LES (including outdoor pool) for US$918 which is less than half price. It's across the road from a subway station that will have you in Times Square in 15 minutes. I'm staying there in June.

Hi Canada,

my daughter, 18 years and I stayed at pod 39 last year. I've looked for your dates and it is US$ 195, per night.

we stayed in the bunk pod, which had our own bathroom. My daughter took top bunk, and we both had TVs at the end of the beds.

Coffee and bagel for breakfast downstairs for $3.
there is also a rooftop open air bar / lounge with great views.
also a fantastic Mexican bar restaurant on the ground floor.

walk 3 blocks to grand central station, where the subway will take you everywhere.

the hotel also offers free walking tours three times a week.

basic small room, but you never spend much time in your room in NYC. There is so much to do all day and night.

maybe worth a look for you. wwwthepodhotel.com

TQ

It doesn't matter too much where you stay in Manhattan because of the good and cheap public transport and also the ease of walking.
this one sounds an OK price-radio City apartments.Very central.Easy walk to Times square or Central park.
Radio City Apartments, New York, USA - Booking.com

and a cancellable rate.

To get distances for walking it is very easy.20 blocks of streets = 1 mile.3 blocks of avenues = 1 mile.
So the Southern end of Central Park is 59th street and Macy's is on 35th straight down 6th Ave=1.2 miles or about 2kms.

And if you are worried about the subway at night, taxis are plentiful and not that expensive.

Google maps is your friend. Put in your start and finish points and you are away. Change from car, walk, etc etc will give you the distance, time taken, alternate routes. will give you public transport options, bus and train routes and route numbers. Much better than looking at a map and trying to guess

Have you thought about airbnb, generally speaking cheaper than a hotel

For the most part I think this is a myth in NYC. I can ALWAYS find hotels cheaper than apartments (equivalent standard) providing I search a few months in advance. If you require extra space then that's a different story.
