Would have made more sense to introduce an overnight from MEL. Route it MEL-SIN-SYD-MEL so you spread out the extra capacity between MEL and SYD.

Is there increased capacity requirement out of Melbourne as well even after the A380 increase?

Interestingly i just priced out a multi city to include QF72 as an option: MEL-SIN-MEL was $745. MEL-SIN-PER-MEL was $1415!
There was a time where going to SIN via PER was the cheaper option. There was also more capacity with 2 x A330/per day.

So QF doesn't have to open the SIN lounge in the morning I guess?

To be fair to QF - a few weeks ago when they had a A380 down in LHR and their schedule was out of whack - they had a QF1 and QF2 leaving SIN at 8:30 and 9am, each with very few PAX on them (they had all been moved to other flights - my QF2 had 30 PAX total) the QF lounge was open from 6am until the QF2 left at 9am. They even had a decent selection of breakfast offerings - which was impressive given the standard opening hours. The lounge was a ghost town (10 PAX and 10 staff). I was expecting to have to go and find the CX lounge - so I was a happy bunny.

p.s. I'm not suggesting that it isn't a zoo in the evenings - merely saying that QF opened it in the morning for the benefit of a handful of PAX.

Good luck with that. The CX lounge at SIN is in T4. T4 is connected to the other terminals via a bus from T2. They check boarding passes before letting people into the bus waiting area. It you don't have a T4 boarding pass, they are going to make getting to T4 difficult.

Probably could have found the BA lounge (which is almost next door), and the EK lounge which isn't far away

Sadly the BA lounge is closed in the mornings and I don't think that I was eligible to get into the EK lounge (was booked on a QF flight number on BA ticket stock - I have some vague notion in my mind (dubious I know) that you have to be on QF or EK ticket stock)... I didn't appreciate that CX was over in T4. At any rate I really rate the QF Singapore lounge (although I haven't been in there in the evenings since QF1/2 switched back to SIN and the MEL flight was upgraded to an A380) and was very pleased that they opened it in the morning.

The rules are just QF/EK flight number & metal I’m pretty sure (I may be wrong through...)

Yep. Only EK lounge I've been in (other then DXB A) has been the SIN lounge. I once got in there with a CX ticket and an MH issued boarding pass for QF52. (Had to point out the QF flight number because the were confused by the MH stock boarding pass)

You have to have a QF/EK ticket number to get access to things like Dubai Connect or Chauffeur Drive. Lounge access just needs the flight number/metal to be EK/QF.

Good to see that there is now a Wednesday flight between Australia and NC with a QF flight number. Still think it's weird that QF doesn't codeshare on SB110/111 which are currently the only Wednesday flights between NC and Australia.

Problem is the Sydney curfew.
Means a 3-4am SIN arrival.

At the moment only Scoot as TR13 is operating such a flight departing 3 days a week at 8.45pm and arriving 3.15am.

SQs latest is currently SQ242 at 6pm, only 2 hrs after QF1

Actually their latest flight is SQ288 at 9:20pm which goes to Singapore via Canberra. Even with the stop in Canberra it gets in at 5:15am.

Presumably the extra 50% of an a330 is coming from an increase in F100 utilisation in WA, which frees up 717s to fill in for 737s to fill in for 50% of an a330 (or something along those lines assuming that current services are not being cut outright)?

I just did a quick check of the flight history of the 16 Network F100s and the utilisation is quite low. Some of them sit on the ground for days at a time. I appreciate that some of their flights are associated with the peaks and troughs of shift changes - but there seems to be (at least on recent history) 3 or 4 days stretches where multiple aircraft are on the ground all at once. I get that with 25 year old aircraft you probably want a bit more operational slack in your schedule - but there seems to be plenty about ... certainly enough to free up some 717/737 capacity (although using a F100 in place of a 717 would result in a reduction in Y seat count of 25 against the all Y 717s and 12 business class against the 2 class 717s).
