Has anyone got any advice on birth year champagne purchasing? Specifically, I'd been hoping to pick up a bottle for my daughter's birth in 2018. I'm familiar with how to do that with red wine, but unsure no champagne.. hoping there might be others who could help answer the following:
  • By all accounts i've read 2018 was a great year, and would be a 'vintage' year. My understanding is that not all years are 'vintage' years.. is that correct? will there be '2018 vintage' champagne?
  • When would the 2018 vintage champagne be released? Most red wine from the 2018 vintage is being released nowish, although some may take a few more years
  • Any recommendations on vendors to go to for purchasing? Dan's selection always seems slightly haphazard.. MWG/TWC etc are also hit and miss
  • Are any of the above questions just silly?

there's no hurry, vintage champagne are generally the last wines to be released - latest one now is perhaps 2012, Krug is currently 2006 - so you should have at least 5 years to save before spending on 2018 if/when declared :)

Ah - good to know! I've been much more active on the red-wine front, so wanted to make sure I didn't miss out on the bubbly too.. appreciate the quick response!

You don't need to worry about missing out. As @qaz said, you have many years ahead to be able to pick up 2018 vintage champagne. Especially the really top of the line stuff.

Of all the wine, champagne is the most delicate of wines in terms of needing to be stored correctly.

Bollinger PN VZ 15 isn't online yet, haven't called/asked in-store, but in the meantime if you can't find cheap La Grande Annee at BWS, then AusCellardoor have Special Cuvee for $67.92 using SPRING - thanks/credit to @SleepyPolarBear

Bollinger PN VZ15 $142.72 @ Dan's eBay Plus after 20% off PLUSFLASH, 5% ShopBack + $10 Bonus ShopBack - ends 9pm AEDT tonight

I'd be interested to hear what you have picked up on the red front?

I had a daughter in 2019 - so far I have 5 magnums of Grosset Polish Hill Riesling.

My dream would be to get an allocation of Wendouree and get a few of their reds to put down... Clare Valley being the theme...

just ordered one bottle due to only finding it a few minutes before the sale ended, else might have bought all five available, so will likely be a while until opened - Langton's sold out of ten cases within hours yesterday:

Krug and Comtes recent releases reviewed on JamesSuckling.com

Bollinger has launched the premier edition of its first new Champagne cuvée since 2008 - PN VZ 15
As the name implies, it is a 100% Pinot Noir built on a core of fruit from Verzenay and based on the 2015 vintage.

didn't realise that current/future vintages of Veuve Cliquot La Grande Dame - 2008, 2012, 2015 - are 90%+ pinot noir

Anyone know the cheapest place to buy a bottle of Dom?

Lotte Duty Free and Maison One

nice to see some whites such as riesling there :)

should definitely try to have a variety of wines if possible - even if you don't drink those kinds now, your tastes could change over time, else your daughter might like them - also they'll develop/mature/peak differently:
  • whites - riesling, chardonnay, semillon
  • reds - nebbiolo, cabernet, shiraz, grenache, pinot noir
  • dessert/fortified - Sauternes/Barsac, vintage port
too early to know yet if 2019 will be as good as 2018 around Australia across varieties, but there have already been great whites and grenaches released, as well as the third in a trifecta of top Hunter vintages

Arras Brut Elite Cuvee $24.33 @ Cellarmasters after $50 voucher, 5% off WISH, 20% Cashrewards (Payments made using Giftcards are eligible for cash back) - today only - I have a spare $30 and $50 voucher

Still, would be really keen on some discount Billecart-Salmon or Louis Roederer if it ever makes it to these deals, never found myself with a bottle of either!
re Roederer, watch for 15-20% off sales on eBay that include Nicks or Dan's - some DM stores had Billecart on clearance last year

Langton’s: Ed Carr & House of Arras - Arras Brut Elite NV, Arras Grand Vintage 2009, Arras Blanc de Blanc 2009, Arras Rose 2008, Arras LD 2005 & Arras Grand Vintage 2007 Magnum

Bollinger La Grande Année is on clearance 25%/30% off for $176.30/$164.50 at BWS - with 10% off $100+ spend (ends today) + 10% off 6pks + 5% off WISH that makes it $135.66/$126.58 - not as cheap as previously but still worth considering

Also at BWS, Billecart-Salmon Brut Réserve is on sale for $80, or $61.56 after above discounts

Arras Brut Elite (Cuvée 1501 NV: HH/JH95, CHC94, TS92) is available at Cellarmasters for $27.82 in 6pk after 15% off with DIGIDEAL and 20% ShopBack (ends today, excludes gift cards) ($29.99 @ Cellar One after $20 referral)

Thanks, got a few of the Billecart. Not sure where you saw the Boll but it wasn't even listed anywhere when I tried to find it! :(

It wouldn’t come up on the search engine at all for me. I wonder if it’s something to do with state.

Oddly, it can’t even find “glenrose” in the app to choose as a store?

Apparently Belrose is the suburb and you can’t search by store name.
And now Boll does come up. I’m going to feed back to them about their terrible app.

Dee Why also has some (hoping you are Sydney based and this is not just a tease)

Artamon has Billecart Reserve at $77 prediscounts
