Oh, yeah, forgot to mention (too late for Matt but for future reference), we had an enjoyable day out in Bitan / Xindian old street. Suspension bridge and waterfront, had a ride on a paddle boat, nice lunch across the bridge (other side of the river) in a little dumpling restaurant. The waterfront restaurants on the near side looked like over-priced tourist traps. Xindian is on the MRT.
Also, a walk around the old town Dadaocheng (Dihua St) is interesting, can have brunch at the sushi stall in Yongle market (gets VERY busy from 11am), and lunch in the beer garden (food stalls) in front of the Dadaocheng Cisheng Temple.
