Advice on tourist refund scheme - ipad 2

"so far (after many years of travelling to the US) I am unaware of any tourist tax rebate scheme for the US."

A few years ago I recall leaving New Orleans (Louisianna) and claiming the sales tax on clothing I had purchased on the way out of the State to New York (ie I wasn't even leaving the country, immediately). Not sure if the refund scheme is still available.

Yeah, the sales taxes in the US are all state taxes, and hence all with different rates and rules regarding refunds when leaving the state, shipping to people in a different state, getting stuff from another state shipped to you, etc... complete nightmare.

Some US states do no not have a sales tax as such as items can be bought tax-free.

In Alaska for example, where I have bought my QC15 for the listed price without taxes, also the same with clothing and shoes that I bought where I was there last year.

I was in Texas for Aug and noticed they did have a TRS. A lot of terms and conditions though... see TaxFree Shopping
I'm still actually waiting for my refund to hit my paypal account.

I am going overseas in December and am thinking of getting myself iPad 2 before the trip. Just wondering, if I do take it overseas and claim GST back at TRS, do I need to have everything in boxes, sealed and unopened? Or I can get away with taking ipad 2 without all the boxes?

Pretty sure just the iPad and the receipt. I haven't done this for a while, but bought a camera a few years ago and claimed it back without all the packaging. I think you can buy it up to 30 days before from memory too.

No. Just have the original tax invoice.

I recently claimed back GST on golf clubs of all things and the customs agent did not even bother to look at the new golf clubs. Just stamped the tax invoice and I claimed the GST back after immigration.
