AFF Gathering #17 in BNE on 18 - 20 October 2024

brisbane-18-20-october.jpg

We're pleased to announce that the 2024 AFF annual gathering will be held in Brisbane, the sunny capital of Queensland!

The weekend of Friday 18 - Sunday 20 October 2024 has been chosen for the event. As per past years, there will be a welcome dinner on the Friday evening, optional activities on Saturday and a main dinner on Saturday evening. There may also be an optional activity on Sunday in the late morning.

All AFF members (and +1's, etc.) are welcome to attend. Most people usually fly in on Friday afternoon and leave on the Sunday afternoon/evening.

Your lead organisers for this year's event are @NM and @QF WP. Other Brisbane-based members are also welcome to volunteer to assist.

We'll update this thread over the coming months with more information about the planned activities, dinner venues and costs, which we expect to be similar to past gatherings. There will be a $5 registration fee per participant, plus the cost of any activities and/or meals that you choose to join.

For now, please feel free to let us know in this thread if you think you'll be able to make it! For those unfamiliar with the AFF terminology:

  • "Platinum" means you're planning to attend and have booked flights/accommodation
  • "Gold" means you're likely to attend but will need to confirm at a later time
  • "Silver" means you're unlikely to attend at this stage.
  • "Bronze" means you're unable to attend.

The AFF Leadership Team can provide support in terms of money collection and distribution, and editing this thread as needed. If something needs to be updated, please simply report the post with the update so anyone on the team can action it (starting a conversation only alerts one person).

We're looking forward to seeing you all in Brissie!

If it’s not too late to add my name to the list (on my lonesome it seems due to work commitments for my +1) for the Saturday dinner, that would be appreciated. Will forward payment ASAP once I’ve got details. Brisbane local.

1 week and we will be sitting in the non existent lounge at NTL, choice of Red Rooster or sandwich.....
Can only hope that with the extension to international flights, we might get at least 1 lounge.

Hi Ben. Just saw your message. I have sent you a cost summary message (including payment details) for Saturday night. If you can confirm and pay quickly we would love to have you attend. We are just finalising the arrangements now with the venue.

Thank you everyone who has registered and paid. Payments have been received from all confirmed attendees and we are making final confirmations and payments to the venues now.

If your preferred name for your boarding pass is not obvious to me from your previous conversations or from your AFF username (i.e. Mattg is going to get Matt printed on his boarding pass) then please let me know what you would like to be printed on your boarding pass (aka name badge) along with your AFF username. You can just add it to the existing conversation message from your cost summary or send via a new message to me. I am planning to prepare these over the weekend.

Yes, it’s been a busy week getting the final confirmation. numbers from attendees, payments, confirmation from venues and guests. Still plenty to do. @NM is doing a lot behind the scene and our catch up phone call this afternoon elicited more ideas. He’s a 💎

I’m doing a final visit to both venues on Tuesday. Then everything should be in place.

The weather on the weekend looks quite OK for Friday and probably most of Saturday. Looks like Sunday might be rainy, and both Saturday & Sunday afternoon possibly a bit windy. Though these forecasts keep changing so better keep an eye on them if you were hoping for outdoor activities or walking from place to place.

The orange graph is for temperature, blue area the probability of rain, and blue graph for wind speed.

I know it's poor form when a brissy1 can't make a Brissy function but anyway, apologies, and have fun.
This is AFF ... which means nobody should be surprised that a local is not available, assuming of course that you have the only valid excuse of being away in another city/country at the time ;)

Thanks tdimdad. Feel free to keep monitoring and taking on the role and responsibility of the event weather reporter. This responsibility will, of course, come with accepting the blame for anything less than the anticipated Queensland "Beautiful one day, perfect the next" reputation ;)

Having lived ten years in Brissie, I do remember what to expect. Happy to tell when the downpour has started. 😉
