AFF Gathering #17 in BNE on 18 - 20 October 2024

We're pleased to announce that the 2024 AFF annual gathering will be held in Brisbane, the sunny capital of Queensland!

The weekend of Friday 18 - Sunday 20 October 2024 has been chosen for the event. As per past years, there will be a welcome dinner on the Friday evening, optional activities on Saturday and a main dinner on Saturday evening. There may also be an optional activity on Sunday in the late morning.

All AFF members (and +1's, etc.) are welcome to attend. Most people usually fly in on Friday afternoon and leave on the Sunday afternoon/evening.

Your lead organisers for this year's event are @NM and @QF WP. Other Brisbane-based members are also welcome to volunteer to assist.

We'll update this thread over the coming months with more information about the planned activities, dinner venues and costs, which we expect to be similar to past gatherings. There will be a $5 registration fee per participant, plus the cost of any activities and/or meals that you choose to join.

For now, please feel free to let us know in this thread if you think you'll be able to make it! For those unfamiliar with the AFF terminology:

• "Platinum" means you're planning to attend and have booked flights/accommodation
• "Gold" means you're likely to attend but will need to confirm at a later time
• "Silver" means you're unlikely to attend at this stage.
• "Bronze" means you're unable to attend.

The AFF Leadership Team can provide support in terms of money collection and distribution, and editing this thread as needed. If something needs to be updated, please simply report the post with the update so anyone on the team can action it (starting a conversation only alerts one person).

Friday casual lunch (not a part of the official AFF program but a good way to get to know some early birds):
1 pm at Bird's Nest, West End. I've booked a table for 6 but will monitor this thread and add seats, if needed.

If you have any dietary requirements, please check their menu. If it looks like they don't readily cater for your diet, send me a direct message (conversation) and I'll let them know so they can advise what they can do.

Birds nest is pretty small, but I can make it for lunch on Fri if there's a spot.

Can be Plat on fri night dinner, with a Silver +1. Unable to make the others except if there was a lunch on Sunday.

Got our reality check today with an email from Qantas reminding us of our flight AKL-BNE on Friday. Looking forward to catching up with everyone on Friday evening.

While there is no pre-payment requirement for Friday night dinner, there is a venue capacity limit for the event and we are very close to that limit with the numbers registered and we need to know some details of those attending (first names to associate with your AFF user name). If you wish to be added to the attendees list please send me (and/or QF WP) your first names and attendance confirmation via a Conversation Message and we will add you to the list of attendees.

Rain currently forecast for Saturday ( and 34 deg . I know it’s a fair way off still, but would any of the Saturday A schedule require a raincoat if the forecast holds?

You seem to be experiencing the same double ups. I have spent most of this evening deleting mine.

A lot of the Qld Air Museum displays are under cover, but there are some aircraft displayed on the grass paddock. So if it rains, some sort of protection might be helpful.

But keep in mind this is Qld in late spring, so don't put too much belief in the forecast. And the forecast depends a lot on which source you use. For example, The Weather App on my phone is showing rain only on Wednesday this week (40% chance they say). And Saturday shows as cloudy and 19-32 degrees. B ut when drilling down on Saturday, its showing 30% chance of precipitation but total precipitation of 0mm all day

The BOM site is showing possible showers stated as 25% chance of at least 2mm. Showers in this area tend to be short and isolated. Its the storm cells that come with a bang.

I think the only certainty is that it will be warm and likely humid - welcome to Queensland .

Its always a few degrees cooler near the coast (Qld Air Museum is at Caloundra) so unlikely to get to 34. Could get to that in the city and in the west.

Well, @drron is heading south on the weekend, so you might be able to borrow some shorts from him. Pack a hat, sun screen and rain coat (when it rains here, an umbrella is often of little use .
