AFF Gathering #17 in BNE on 18 - 20 October 2024

We're pleased to announce that the 2024 AFF annual gathering will be held in Brisbane, the sunny capital of Queensland!

The weekend of Friday 18 - Sunday 20 October 2024 has been chosen for the event. As per past years, there will be a welcome dinner on the Friday evening, optional activities on Saturday and a main dinner on Saturday evening. There may also be an optional activity on Sunday in the late morning.

All AFF members (and +1's, etc.) are welcome to attend. Most people usually fly in on Friday afternoon and leave on the Sunday afternoon/evening.

Your lead organisers for this year's event are @NM and @QF WP. Other Brisbane-based members are also welcome to volunteer to assist.

We'll update this thread over the coming months with more information about the planned activities, dinner venues and costs, which we expect to be similar to past gatherings. There will be a $5 registration fee per participant, plus the cost of any activities and/or meals that you choose to join.

For now, please feel free to let us know in this thread if you think you'll be able to make it! For those unfamiliar with the AFF terminology:

  • "Platinum" means you're planning to attend and have booked flights/accommodation
  • "Gold" means you're likely to attend but will need to confirm at a later time
  • "Silver" means you're unlikely to attend at this stage.
  • "Bronze" means you're unable to attend.

The AFF Leadership Team can provide support in terms of money collection and distribution, and editing this thread as needed. If something needs to be updated, please simply report the post with the update so anyone on the team can action it (starting a conversation only alerts one person).

We're looking forward to seeing you all in Brissie!

Nothing like thread drift. The Auslan interpreter wasn’t organised by us, @goldcoasteagle did it himself through NDIS. Did feel a little strange but lovely that he was so involved in the event (and won the prize for answering all the questions on the back of the menu).

I did help out most tables with some answers. I was a little surprised that I was the only one to have flown Concorde, but considering it was back in 2002, that showed age was important.

Now onto working out the destination for next years. We'll have a Mods meeting, watch this space for the announcement 🤔

And here is the final World Map from the event.

And the statistics are:
  • National Flags: we pinned 251 of 318 National Flag pins.
  • USA State Flags: we pinned 47 of 51 USA State pins.
  • Canadian Provinces: we pinned 10 of 13 Canadian Provinces pins.
  • Australian States: we pinned 9 of 9 Australian State/Territories.
Thanks to everyone for contributing to the map.

Noting there are only 50 US states why are there 51 flags?

Washington DC is a federal district, not a state.
Because that is what was supplied when I bought the set of pins :) And yes, there is one for District of Columbia. But they all come under the label of "Flags of States of USA"

I also note an anomaly in the "National Flags", that includes Gambia and The Gambia. The flag pins are identical, with them listed alphabetically in G and T.

I also love Double State Credits!

There are ring-ins on the 'country' level, too. Easter Island, Galapagos, Greenland, Falklands are all territories of some variety, not sovereign states.

Add they missed Bermuda, if they include flagged 'territories' :)

Yep, that's what happens with we buy these things from Amazon while trying to keep the overall event costs reasonable ;). You gets what you pays for :P.

We clearly need to reframe the topic: which locations have you visited? If they happen to have a flag, on you go to pin it on the board. 😎
