AFF Gathering #3, Sydney, October 23-25, 2009

It's discontinued for a good reason I think (apart from seasonal changes which this venue doesn't seem to adopt). I personally found that drink rather sickly sweet, YMMV.

I certainly wouldn't drink it all the time, but it's definitely something different. Nice to see some variety and ingenuity put into coughtails rather than those places that consider mixing "coke" and "vodka" a coughtail.

Apparently it's been discontinued because the bartender who designed it (and went to some national championships, apparently) has left.

Cheers,
- Febs.

Oh, completely agree. Dress code usually plays second fiddle to a membership card or a few beautiful women. But the fact is that dressing nicely will, in most situations, give you a better chance of getting into places (see previous Hemmesphere example I mentioned)

Indeed. As a general rule I tend to dress well when going out on the town. It makes life easier knowing that you will fit into every dress code, and it's much easier to dress-down a nice outfit, than it is to dress-up.

I love dressing up. I'd just remember to bring more comfy loafers next time.

Well I've just caught up on ~15 pages of comments about the weekend. Looks like there was a good time had by all, but a dearth of pictures actually to prove that there were functions attended....

Perhaps I'll be a starter at AFF W&D II in Brisbane. I suppose I'll have to put my hand up for being on the organising committee.

Thanks everyone for coming along and making an ejoyable weekend.

I would also like to thank our guests that came along on Saturday night, although they may not have got to chat with everyone.

Luisa Megale and Todd Beavis from American Express. They had some interesting things to say about some promotion that happened last year, and I hope they can join us next year.

Luke (tlukec) from Booking.com. For those that don't know booking.com power the hotel booking engine on AFF (Australian Frequent Flyer Hotels)

and not forgetting admin from Australian Frequent Flyer

We had some door prizes on the night:

First prize was a night at Rendezvous Hotel thanks to Booking.com
Winner: Phil

Memberships to AFF thanks to admin:
Gold membership to AFF: Patricia (aka noahb+1)
Silver membership to AFF: Jennifer (aka serfty+1)
Silver membership to AFF: Noah (aka noahb)

Looking forward to Brisbane 2010 :)

The Brisbane Drinks members shall meet shortly and start the process of choosing venues, dates and other things.

I see from the posts that there is discussion about a #3A event somewhere and a #4 event in Brisbane. Have any approximate, or firm dates been set for these :?:

#3A is something you'd have to talk to QF009 about, as for #4, I'd expect that to be in about a year. Brisbane members will discuss at the next BNE Drinks night though, and try get the ball rolling on planning it.

Now I've been told that I have been somewhat unanimously selected as part of the organisation team for AFF Gather #4 in BNE. Are you insane??!!

Perhaps I'll be a starter at AFF W&D II in Brisbane. I suppose I'll have to put my hand up for being on the organising committee.

Definitely looks as though people are keen on Brisbane And we have a whole committee in the making! I would suggest around the same time next year. Last weekend in October makes it easy to remember :)

There are also a few interested in doing something overseas, so who knows, maybe we will get something off the ground there

I'm sure Keith will agree that every day that ends in 'day' is a shopping day. :p
So no shopping "tomorrow". ;)

Shoes and shopping! What a waste of time! Unless playing golf, or any other sport, a pair a black slip-on leather shoes is more than adequate 99% of the time....

Sports - what are those? Unless referring to brisk walking from one end of <insert name of major shopping strip> to the other, or annual marathon Boxing Day bargain hunts from 5am till 5pm.

Waitwait .. drinking is a sport, right?!

Said black slip-on leather shoes would have likely gotten QF009 in to Hemmesphere as well.. ;)

And a BIG THANK YOU to oz_mark (and other helpers) for organizing such a successful event. It is pretty clear that everyone had a fantastic time. Looking forward to seeing you all again at the next Gathering (Brisbane?). For those that missed the week-end, try to make the next one. You won't regret it!

Also, a special thanks from me to our industry guests:
  • Luisa Megale and Todd Beavis from American Express. American Express are previous sponsors of this site and always take a keen interest in the views and opinions expressed on AFF.
  • Luke Crosthwaite (tlukec) from Booking.com. Thanks Luke for the generous door prize you arranged. Much appreciated
It is just a shame that the venue was too noisy for you too share your ideas and industry insights. Next year we will be sure to make appropriate arrangements.

As oz_mark mentioned, there were some door prizes. Phil won complimentary accommodation at the Rendezvous Hotel (courtesy of booking.com), Patricia won 1 year free AFF GOLD membership, and Jennifer and Noah won 1 year free AFF SILVER membership.

I'm now going to close this thread as the event is over. If you would like to add photos please contact me.

Thanks again for your participation in making this event so successful.
