Should Cairns get the nod a week end of note in Cairns is the annual Cairns Amateurs race weekend.

While it is a hoot ........flights / accommodation / hire cars / taxis / restaurants can be stretched to regional city limits.

The 2015 event is on the weekend of September 11 and 12.

So we are basically down to the first weekend of Sep or the 2nd weekend of Oct to avoid the events and school holidays? (Or later in Oct but that's getting a little bit warm...)

Just looking back on some sale emails from QF , basically the period for school holidays this year was around 17 Sept -15 Oct, so looking at next years calendar , id say it will be 16 Sept - 14th Oct for the equivalent school holiday period. Therefore if we were looking at doing it roughly the same time then you would look at dates something like the 11-13 Sept or 16-18 Oct ..... or we could look at sometime in late July which would be get the majority of us out of the grip of winter into the tropics for a weekend . Food for thought when the date voting commences. :p

Just a small note as people have jumped to discussing dates.

If the event is to be held in Cairns and if people want to take up my offer to organise it then Sun 13 Sept to Sat 19 Sept are out for me as I'll already be in Cairns for a reunion of my RAAF Pilots course.

That's good Bill as we will be in Borax2 from 6-15 Sep, and we would love to go to Cairns too :)

Different States have different dates for school holidays.

I'd choose other than amateurs week, Cairns is a mad house and unless your in a corp tent at the races you might find the facilities like loo's lacking.

So this should give some concrete exclusion dates. September 19 to October 4 are out.

I Gave my vote to Cairns as the City & the surrounding area has plenty of attractions.
Not to mention a large choice of accommodation to suit all budgets.

Longreach is a worthy contender too, that no doubt will come up again in the future a contender for host destination.

Once location and date has been confirmed it will be a race to get a rewards flight

Cairns has won as the location for AFF#9!

I will set up a dates poll ASAP but likely not before this weekend due to events and packing coming up.

End of October is getting hot but certainly not unbearable. I've been in Port Douglas at the end of October/start of November and it was fine.

I guess that will depends on where you are based in. It's a max of 23'C in MEL, and they are calling it a beautiful day, so those based in the more southern cities might not agree it. Having said that, I'm based in SIN so it will be business as usual for myself. :)

I'm a Pom in Brissie, so if I can cope, you locals sure can ;).

Is August too early? Great opportunity for the southerners to escape the winter cool.

Friday 17 July is Cairns Show holiday (end of 1st week back from winter school holidays). Lots of locals escape Cairns for the long weekend.

I have a friend who works for Down Under Tours. I'd be happy to put the organizer of the event in touch with them if you are thinking of coach hire and or packaged tours of attractions, such as Kuranda Rail, Skyrail, Reef etc. (don't know if I can promise discounts though).

Thanks Kev. Will keep that in mind.
