Proposed Kokoda Date Thread

As there is enough interest to continue the AFF 2017 Kokoda trail trek (congrats people, I'm somewhat amazed), the next step is to establish some possible dates. The poll attached is to ascertain month(s)......preferred dates within the month should be posted in the body of the text and let's see how we go!

To recap on the other initial thread, the proposal is to trek the Kokoda track to coincide (coincidentally) with the 75th anniversary of hostilities and many casualties on this track during WWII.

Ha.....a newcomer!

Bear in mind Kokoda is only 8 degrees off the equator!

However the trek rises to about 2200m (approx. 7300 ft). I work in PNG at about 8000 feet and I can say it regularly rains (about 8m a year) and is a constant temperature all year round between 10oC and 22oC. The track is a bit different as it rises from a low of about 350m to about 2200m, so temps will vary from hot to temperate.

I want to register my interest x 2 (son) but I'm not going to vote. He will be in grade 11 next year, and I've got no idea what his timetable will be.

It's better that others select the date - then we'll see if it all fits in.

Re: Proposed AFF Kokoda trek

I'm a bronze for this one.
I recently trekked the Inca Trail and those approximately 2000 steps were tough on my knees!!! But what a satisfying achievement :).

I really cannot imagine struggling through the endless mud on the Kokoda.

Re: Proposed AFF Kokoda trek

Something I've always wanted to do. swanning_it - thanks for taking the initiative on this one.

Please put me down as SILVER.

Re: Proposed AFF Kokoda trek

You can definitely take my name off the BRONZE list - I will not do the trek - even if hell freezes over :p

But you can leave rons name on the SILVER list ;)

Re: Proposed AFF Kokoda trek

Can't see it's worthwhile me choosing a date if I am a Silver/Bronze. Wouldn't want my selection to put weight to the chosen month and sink somebody elses' chance who are higher on the probable list.

That's my thinking even as someone slightly more likely to go. Choose a date and if it works for me, then I may come along for the ride! Walk.

Re: Proposed AFF Kokoda trek

I'm in the same boat as well, currently sitting on 295 SC on the QF scale so I wouldn't put any votes in.

Re: Proposed AFF Kokoda trek

Three of four voters have April. My +1 hasn't voted, so that'd make it 4 of 5 for April (presumably all wanting the ANZAC service at Bomana to coincide)?

I'd suggest we may be close to making this a goer if each voter is semi-serious. Someone asked time frames and I replied previously that it should be months before a decision is made......however I didn't take into account for ANZAC treks being popular and we may need to decide fairly quickly in order to secure bookings.

Re: Proposed AFF Kokoda trek

My fitness rules me out although put in some tees and greens and the motivation changes. No need for hazards as there are enough natural hazards.

Re: Proposed AFF Kokoda trek

April rules me out anyway, swanning.

Hope you all have fun! I'll think of you sweating away from my chopper ;)

Well the firming dates of April may help you amaroo - here are the (public) school holidays - which may be different if in a private, independent or Catholic school:

2016 - 2020 school holidays and term dates
