AFF Member Stock Discussion

I was hoping someone would have a recommendation for me.

I have some shares (ABLZF) on the NYSE (well, maybe OTC off the NYSE?) and they are no longer going to be supported by CommSec because they're OTC. I have them through CommSec and Pershing as the local <whatever it's called>.

Yes, I'm a very sophisticated shareholder - these shares were originally purchased through the employee share plan when I was an employee, and transferred to the NYSE from the Swiss stock exchange after I left ABB. I've only realised they are OTC, and that there's a thing such as OTC, since finding out CommSec is going to support NYSE OTC shares. I thought they were standard ABB shares directly on the NYSE.

Can anyone recommend options of services that I can transfer them to, now that CommSec isn't supporting this type of shares? I'm trying to figure out if I have an option other than selling them.

Has anyone heard of / looked at the PM Capital Global Opportunities fund (PGF)? Their returns are pretty impressive and they offer some decent diversification.

A surprise down day today on the stock market. We seem to be stuck in a sideways move for the last few months. Any thoughts for 2024 FY?

Slightly tangential question for the forum. Obviously very secondary to making sound long term investments.

What are the 'best' ASX company AGMs to attend - any AGMs with great catering? 😂

Given it is possible to claim a tax deduction where travel expenses where sole purpose of the travel relates to the share investment (e.g. attending an AGM) and given the travel focus of this forum I was wondering if anyone has chosen to fly see an AGM.

I believe the ATO dropped the ability to claim junket trips like that (including visiting investment properties)….

I did hear about the ATO tightening the rules around visiting investment properties a few years back but the ATO website still says that "the portion of your costs that are for managing your investments, such as: some travel expenses, for example to attend the annual general meeting of a company you hold shares in" can be claimed as a deduction.

I claim a yearly trip MEL-PER return on investment purposes.
I only claim airfares, even if overnight accom is involved. It's my take on being fair. I don't know the exact rules anymore, was above board when I started doing it so will continue until I'm pulled up or don't hold the shares anymore.

It's only a few $$ I don't care to investigate if right or wrong.

To claim the airfares, you would need to only attend the AGM. If you caught up with friends or family on the same trip then you wouldn't be able to claim the full airfare.

Indeed, this was essentially why the rules on investment properties was changed, People claiming they were going to 'inspect' an investment property and then staying for a week, obviously a holiday and the ATO aren't that stupid.

This is wrong. If you went to an agm then it is tax deductible. If you did other things that are private you would have had to fly anyway. So flights are always 100% deductible. Then you apportion accommodation and other costs based on deductible purpose. However 1 night is not unreasonable to claim.
