This was part of a RTW ticket but I don't understand why most tourists would want to fly short or medium distances within Europe when the rail networks are so enjoyable to travel on.

Beautiful scenery at eye level through normally clean large windows not the tiny aircraft equivalent, on-board buffet cars that sell beer/wine plus a good range of food, far more spacious and comfortable seating than on any short distance aircraft such as this A220 and the ability to observe locals going about their daily business.

Add to that how trains normally depart from and arrive in the centre of cities with easy connections to and from local mass transit, and no huge airport queues as Mattg experienced, plus the ability to rock up to a train five minutes before departure and no bothersome and tedious airport security (that as many have commented can be window-dressing with inconsistent rules and aggressive staff) and European trains win hands down over aircraft.

And queuing on trains to use the loo is far less the case than on aircraft.

Flygskam!

Another good write-up. The plane certainly looks schmick. A great photo of the alps-must have had a nice sized, clean window :)

Big fan of rail as well, even sometimes when connecting to/from flights. It epitimozes that great pilot saying of "sit back, relax and enjoy the .." (journey).

But I guess it depends on time constraints, end destination etc. Zurich-Ljubljana is about the same distance as Melbourne-Adelaide is by road (although by air it is a bit shorter), and it's 10-11hrs by rail, so I can see that rail can be time consuming on this sector, especially as Zurich is usually a very efficient airport, and LJU is more like a nice little regional airport, easy to deal with, similar in annual passenger traffic to TSV.

All this aside, nice trip report @AFF Editor ! The A220's seem to be well regarded and will have to find an opportunity to try it out one day!

Ohhh, row 1 - you didn't get to fully experience those ZIM seats , man-spreaders eat your heart out - the tray table deploys with just one stabilisation pole, yoke-like it is centered between your legs!
