Hi,

Does anyone know a way to hire a car and not pay the age surcharge? I'm 23. Not sure if it is possible!

Thanks for any help

Unlikely as it would be a condition imposed by the insurers - although having said that I have a vague memory that a motoring club like the RACV might have special arrangements with a car rental company for their members.

I've experienced the surcharge being avoided as a 19 year old with a car hired by my employer. The employers insurance taking precedence in that case.

The difference is only $5-10/day depending on the car. In my experience they want to restrict the type of car rather than whack a fee on top.

I think you'll find it varies state by state. I've hired cars in a few states and I don't think most of them charged an age surcharge. Try using corporate codes that may change the t+cs. Often they are no cheaper than a deal you can find but come with free insurance or different benefits. Qantas have a code with a few companies, and I think the auto clubs often do too. Then there's the Entertainment book and maybe your employer if you have one.

Thank you everyone,

Trippin - I am on VIC, and here at least the surcharge, across the majors at least, seems to be about $30/ day. Although I notice in NSW there seems to be no surcharge, which is odd.

Cynicor - I took your suggestion and booked using an AWD (Avis Worldwide Discount) code, which changed the age requirement to 21 and thus avoid the surcharge, plus a discount on the rate. Great result!

No probs. It's great when people post a follow-up as things change over time and my last booking was 2-3 years age.
