Air Canada quietly made a change to its Economy fare categories and inclusions on all flights to Asia-Pacific this week, including between Australia/New Zealand and North America.

You now need to pay CAD75 more per direction to check in a bag on the cheapest Economy fares. Air Canada is the first airline not to automatically include a checked bag in this market, other than Jetstar on its Hawaii services.

In fairness they do let you take a carry on which I suspect for many tourists visiting Australia makes sense. What I'm waiting for them is to have an ultra basic fare which doesn't include a carry on (just a personal item under your seat). No doubt that'll attract backpackers seeking a weekend trip to Sydney.

It's a race to the bottom. Next they'll be charging for water on a basic fare!

Times like these do make me wonder if a low cost airline like Jetstar is better because at least you are clearly told what you're getting and if you want more you pay more.
