Qantas' six-year monopoly on its most profitable route will come to an end in November when Air New Zealand resumes flights from Auckland to London, albeit via Perth.

Commencing on 3 November, flights will be operated by Air New Zealand's 787 Dreamliner, with the airline confirming that Air NZ's latest business class products will “fully feature” on the Auckland-Perth-London route by mid-2025. The new service, initially 4x weekly, will use the flight numbers NZ3 and NZ4, with the current Auckland-Los Angeles service using these flight numbers changing to NZ11/12 come November.

Air NZ previously flew from Auckland to London via Los Angeles until 2020 when the route was discontinued due to cost and demand concerns, with then-Air NZ CEO Chris Luxon pointing to figures showing that only seven percent of travellers between Europe and New Zealand choose to fly via Los Angeles.

While a joke, I wonder if this route would make some decent competition. QF prices are astronomical, surely a decent amount must be profit

I think if it was any other airline that would fly PER-LHR, it would be VS or BA rather than NZ.
