AirBNB - Share your experiences here

It was published and I just checked and the old photos are still on there

Good to know.

Fortunately I've only had reasonable experiences. Some better than others, but overall they were all at least satisfactory.

I still generally prefer a regular hotel but would use AirBnB again, particularly as it can offer so much more value for money in some cities.

At some stage I will post a link to most of my accommodation with places I wouldn't recommend and others that I wouldn't want to go near again

Just FYI, I just made a bkg and by mistake tried to put it on a since cancelled card. AirBnB recognised that and charged it to another card, fortunately it was the card I was trying to charge to anyway.

Has anyone been charged Fx rates on a booking made in $A for an Australian house?

Not sure of your specific circumstance but yes, this used to get me all the time when I was in Singapore but seems less common in Australia. You can get charged a DCC fee (Dynamic Currency Conversion) even when you're making transactions in your home currency. As best I understand it, it's a mechanism that card operators use to ensure that you pay a fee even if you choose to pay using your card's currency, because the payment was processed overseas.

Dynamic currency conversion - Wikipedia

The problem I have is trying to contact AirBNB to ask the question about what has changed because it hasn't happened before. It's almost impossible to contact them

If it is DCC, they'll just point you back to your bank. I tried to find the response they sent me when I last complained about it back in late 2016/early 2017, but essentially they told me they had only charged me the converted amount in my currency and to take it up with my bank, who then acknowledged that I was charged the DCC fee.

100% new to airbnb.
made a booking for ~3wks in Canada for July '19.
Have paid 50% so far.

whats the protocol normally for payment?
when should we pay the balance?
don't want the guy to cancel on us last minute.. seems to happen a bit from a few reviews I've read for other properties

I think when they take the rest of the money depends on cancellation policy for the property. Also note the host doesn’t see a
cent until after you check in.

Also does that specific host have a record of cancelling stays? If not are they a super host? If they are less likely to cancel on you last minute.

Thanks guys.
Reviews are all positive. No cancellations in the reviews.
Will try and change the credit card now that amex Deval has kicked in, for the balance

Good luck with that - I tried to change the card and had no luck at all

I use PayPal which I keep updated as ccards come and go.
So if the Airbnb balance payment is attempted to be made on eg cancelled card, when that happened to me it defaulted to the next card on my list.

Am thinking of being a Air BnB host but something holds me back
We used it on stay in Dubrovnik last year - height of summer , place was very close to city, by a miracle the uber guy knew the lane - the instructions to get there could have made it an extra hour....
but it was strangely hollow...
cant say i'd rush back ... i'd dont buy the "you stay like a local" the neighbours know who you are and probably despise you

Not me but this:
In July 2017, a collaborator of Muholi's, Sibahle Nkumbi, was pushed down a staircase in Amsterdam by their Airbnb host while visiting the Netherlands to cover the opening of Muholi's exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum.[37] Nkumbi was hospitalised, sustaining a concussion and substantial bruising. Video footage of the confrontation subsequently went viral, and the host was charged with attempted manslaughter.

I was fortunate to have met Zanele Muholi in Durban today. She asked if she could take a few photos of +1 and I.
Google her work, it is brilliant and has been exhibited world wide.

I am a regular Airbnb user for many years but lately I find many hosts (especially those renting entire homes) are just rental agencies using Airbnb as their portal. When you book a place suddenly you get sent rental agreements stating all sorts of cough like they can access the property whenever they like etc. And also demanding copies of Passport etc - which isn't even legal in Australia. A hotel in Australia must "sight" your ID not copy it.
