Not sure of the weight as I don't have my paperwork here. I suspect it fits the heavy catagory due the aerodynamics ie wing plan etc being per a 767.

A little bit of research shows that due to the 757's incredible climb characteristics, it can create relatively heavy wake vorticies for its size.

Here is an interesting (and sad) report on how it caused the disaster for a Citation.

The weight limit for Heavy designation is 255,000 pounds.

The B757 (and H47 Chinook) are only classified as heavy when the following aircraft is either medium or light. The 757 is still classed as medium if the preceeding aircraft is a heavy (AIP ENR 1.4 - 13?ish)

But the 757 is not considered a Heavy due to its weight, but due to its wake turbulance. Its under 255,000 lb MGTW. Boeing 757-200 max takeoff weight is 220,000 lb, while the 757-300 is a genuine heavy at 270,000 lb.

However, the assumption that only widebodies are over 255,000 lb is wrong. The following are not widebody aircraft and are all over 255,000 lb and hence considered "heavies:

• Concorde : 408,000 lb
• DC8-10 : 265,000-273,000 lb
• DC8-20 : 276,000 lb
• DC8-30 : 300,000 - 315,000 lb
• DC8-40 : 300,000 - 315,000 lb
• DC8-50 : 276,000 - 325,000 lb
• DC8-60 : 325,000 - 355,000 lb (DC8 Super 61, 62 and 63)
• Boeing 707-120 : 257,000 lb
• Boeing 707-320 : 312,000 lb
• Boeing 707-420 : 312,000 lb
• Illyushin IL62 : 368,166 lb
• Tupolev TU144 : 396,825 lb (Concordski)
• Vickers VC10 : 312,000 lb
• Vickers Super VC10 : 335,000 lb
