Ie if I see a fare for Aud$1000 Au - AKL - CHC/WLG/ZQN, and I have say 200 Airpoint$, its as simple as using the 200 Airpoint$ to reduce the AirNZ fare?
At this point I have 83.50 Airpoint$, and am just starting the cycle as new, ie, I still have 3yrs and 11 months to collect the rest.
Thanks.

Almost but you cant pay the airport taxes using APD. It can only be used to pay the fare portion of the cost.

For example, as seen in below example.

It doesnt seem to matter on domestic NZ bookings.

And you need to have atleast 20% of the remain non-tax portion as you eluded to.

For other newbies who read this, if you do not have enough Airpoint$ for much/or your balance is quite low, you can use your $10 (if you have it), for a (preferred) seat selection fee.
Just made an AirNZ int booking few mins ago, AKL - MEL, only had 83.5Airpoint$, so not enough to cover the full AKL - MEL fare, but as I wanted a window seat in premY, that 10Airport$ came in handy.
This is the start of my AirNZ FF laision.
