I don't intend commenting on other aspects of the codes.. such as the (classic) ability to go to HEL via SIN...
Didn't you just comment? I was on a flight on it's way to HEL from SIN a few times. :p

P.S. I don't know if it has been done here on AFF... but it can be amusing to check ones own initials to see which (if any) airport they might represent...
I could not find the airport code for JK!

The error I get is 'Area 'jk' not legal in this context' ;)

I usually use NLG for my initials so I get Nelson Lagoon Airport in the US

Yes, the Canadians are very logical.

For example, Vancouver is YVR, Calgary is YYC, and Toronto is YYZ (go figure)...

OK so explain ORD - Chicago and MSY - Louis Armstrong International, Norleans

Chicago has a history. It was constructed back in 1942/43 for making Douglas C54's. The nearest town was Orchard Place.

When they stopped making the C54's, it became Orchard Field Airport, hence ORD :)

As for N'awlins, It was previously known as Moisant Field (named after a famous aviator who died in an aircraft crash on the land where the airport is now, but was then farmland). MSY is derived from Moisant Stock Yards. NEW is used by Lakefront airport.

So, there you go :) Explained :)

(credit goes to google and Wikipedia; I'd like to say I knew this 'off the top of my head' but i'm not that good, honest!).

There was an airport a to the NW of Chicago with a simple name—ORcharD Field. The name was changed in tribute to pilot Lt.Cr. Edward "Butch" O'Hare, USN.

In New Orleans, an airport was built on the site of the former Moisant Stock Yards. John Moisant, an avialtion pioneer, died in a crash at the current location of the airport.

Stock yards for cattle were later put on the land where Moisant met his fate. The owners called the stock yards the Moisant Stock Yards.
The city of New Orleans later bought the stock yards for airfield construction and named it Moisant Field. In 1962, Moisant Field was renamed New Orleans International Airport.

As for Canadian airports, see this post from nearly two years ago:
