Hi

I'm headed to the UK in three weeks.

I have been several times before, but this is the first time we have had to connect through Melbourne from Sydney before heading onto London.

Our flight gets into Melbourne from Sydney at 9:50pm and our flight from Melbourne to London is 10:55pm. I'm a little worried about the small amount of time between arriving at Melbourne and then leaving.

Just wondering what sort of checkpoints will we have to go through and if there is anyway to let the airport staff know that we will be in a hurry to get to our next flight?

I could be totally blowing this out of proportion, but I just want to have all my bases covered.

Thanks in advance!

Hi greenoznic, welcome to AFF.

Edit: should read the question properly first. Refer to medhead's answer below

It's a relatively short walk to the international terminal, where you need to do immigration exit procedures and security screening. 1 hour doesn't leave much time for the lounge, but should be do-able. If you have express passes it might be pretty quick. But I've never found MEL international to be that quick.

Hi greenoznic, welcome to AFF.

You will have to transfer to T1 at SYD and then pass through immigration and security. To better answer your question, can you tell us what airline you're flying?

they are flying from Sydney to Melbourne, so no need for T1 at SYD.

Doh!

I somehow read that as MEL-SYD not the other way around.

So just disregard everything in my previous post.

Are you flying with the same carrier for both flights (QF?) Or are you flying for a different carrier on both legs?

I was in a similar situation and called up to change the domestic leg to an early flight to allow for more time: it wasn't terribly expensive (especially for the piece of mind (and double especially for the champagne I plan on drinking to make up for the fee)).

If your concerned give your carrier a call and see what they suggest?

Thanks for taking the time to answer:)

It's all on the same itinerary. All with Qantas.

Then you'll be fine, however you may want to get to SYD nice and early and see if you can transfer onto an earlier flight. They will often do so with tight connections (as it'll cost them money if you miss it).

Agreed. I would turn up in SYD with plenty of time to take an earlier flight and then ask at check-in. 9 times out of 10 they would say "yes".

Security is the main hold up point, it can be variable. With the new machines in immigration, that is a lot quicker, assuming OP holds an Australian (or another permissible) passport. At 10pm, whilst most pax for QF9 will have already gone through, there is a chance there will be a quite a few passengers going through for the 2330 and midnight departures on CX, TG, MH, SQ, JQ & D7! Having said that late evenings, most people seem to get to the airport really early.

10 mins to get from domestic gate to intl ... 10 mins in security ... 10 mins for immigration and to get to gate. Should be fine.
