Whilst stumbling across videos on Youtube earlier today I came across this interview with Uncle Alan (Alan Joyce) of Qantas during the recent IATA conference:

Key takeaway from the interview is Qantas is nearly back to its pre-pandemic levels although if you look at fares and catering one might argue that this is not the case.

This is quite old isn’t it?

He referenced in the video the A380's are back on MEL-LAX which is currently not the case
Currently that's correct but it does seem that QF will be adding that to some of their more busier travel periods:

Whether Qantas will operate to Seattle or Chicago's Orchard field remains up for debate. If the latter, one must wonder if they possess aircraft that have the range to make the journey nonstop as that's just at the edge of the A380 and A350 range. That being said, it would be a boon if they could operate to Chicago non-stop particularly since it serves the midwest and northeast so well (compared to DFW with its unfavourable weather).

ORD is always doomed for QF!

They had planned to launch BNE-ORD which is comparable length to other ULH routes they use the 787 on, MEL-DFW, PER-LHR and the new AKL-JFK. But ORD-SYD would seem to be too far.

"Go well away from any aircraft"..what a legacy he's left behind then!

Imagine:

"I refuse to drive over any bridge I was involved with"..
"I'm not using that hospital I helped write the procedures for"...

He did suggest SEA or ORD, so probably not both unfortunately.

If SYD-AKL-JFK works out, it could be interesting if they consider something like MEL-AKL-ORD with the timing to give SYD/MEL PAX time to high five and switch in AKL.

Alan Joyce has been in management roles at Aer Lingus, Ansett, Jetstar and Qantas since 1988. He wants to get away from aircraft for a while.

"I'm not using that hospital I helped write the procedures for"...

A probably more apt analogy for someone who's worked in hospitals for most of their career and even ended up running some, "I want to stay well away from any hospital". (or maybe it should be "I want to stay well, away from hospitals" );)

Your analogy would be more like him saying "I want to stay well away from Qantas"

It doesn't rule out the possibility of SYD to ORD (via SEA). If I were a betting man, though, I'd put my chips on them flying to Chicago over Seattle considering there is very little OW presence there (aside from Alaska Airlines which I more affectionately call Seattle Airlines. Then again they also have quite the presence in California too) and considering the fact that Chicago is a major hub for American (arguably JFK, ORD, DFW and to a lesser extent LAX are the big hubs for AA)
If SYD-AKL-JFK works out, it could be interesting if they consider something like MEL-AKL-ORD with the timing to give SYD/MEL PAX time to high five and switch in AKL.
Aside from curfews I could see little reason why AKL couldn't be a major international transit hub for the likes of QF.
Give him a break - he's been doing it for decades.

Some people love Uncle Alan, some people hate him, but everyone has an opinion of him. But you know what? He changed things in the aviation companies he managed (for better or worse). I'd take that any day over a status quo manager who is unwilling to push the envelope. My sense is that he needs a break to refresh and after that will come back in a much larger role than the manager of a regional Asia-Pacific airline. Maybe he'll move on to British Airways. Could he be the next CEO of OneWorld?

Revealed today that AJ sold has 17M worth of shares....
From the Oz on-line

Qantas boss Alan Joyce has dumped nearly $17m worth of shares in the airline – nearly his entire stake – months out from his planned retirement. Joyce sold 2.5m worth of shares on June 1, according to a notice lodged with the ASX.

Following the sale Joyce will have 228,924 shares left, worth $1.45m at current market prices. The shares were accumulated during Joyce’s 13 year stint as chief executive.

While the shares were sold on the market, it’s unusual for CEO’s to liquidate nearly their entire holdings while they are still in the role.
Prior to the sale Joyce was a top 20 shareholder in Qantas with more than 2.7m shares in the airline.

I think 'dumped' is a bit unkind. Good luck, but it is a bit unusual, as the article says. I'm guessing would need Board dispensation, which would be very unusual to be refused in the circumstances.

I would think there are a bunch more shares not yet vested (last year's performance bonus - I guess its back?).
