I Just had another look.

Its not until I log in that it tells me 50%. Email says " earn up to 50% "

It's tiered:

Reach your next award trip even faster with up to 50% bonus miles on your purchase from now through June 13, 2016.

10,000–19,000 miles 20% Bonus
20,000–39,000 miles 35% Bonus
40,000-60,000 miles 50% Bonus

The 50% offer is not targeted

I think it might be targeted.

I have 2 accounts. 1 for me and 1 for my daughter. My account has made a purchase a month ago and I was offered the 50% today. My daughter has not purchased and she is offered the 40% today.

2 different emails are sent out. That is why people are reporting both 50% and 40% offers

You will need to wait until AS can book the seat.
Oneworld partners get first dibs on inventory...

I have had no luck with booking CX flights using AS points - for flights from Europe to Hkg, then Hkg to Australia - nothing complicated. I searched availability on BA, JL and award nexus - all showed F and J seats for days I wanted. Called AS, spoke to 3 different call staff but all were adamant NO availability. Very disappointed. What should I do? Keep calling back? What time would be good to call to get a knowledgeable staff? Would I have more success in trying flights from US (not Europe) to Australia?

Appreciate any tip or pointer here. Thanks in advance.

that's not good to hear, and im in the process of booking the similar flight as well.. HKG - Europe (return)
do keep us updated on your booking...

try..
In theory if an agent tries to manually request the space it should come back as confirmed (and match what other airlines have access to), but it seems like most agents have been told they aren’t supposed to do this. It’s still worth trying, though.

What departure point are you trying to fly from ? I assume it is a direct flight to HKG ?

curious to hear how things panned out.

Thanks everyone for replying. Very sorry about not updating earlier. The route was London to Hongkong for June next year. After Huaca more than half a dozen times I got an agent professed she knew how to search CX for availability. But she could not find any on the dates I saw avail on BA and JL. So I asked her to tell me what days she could find avail for the following month. She found 2 dates with avail in J, nothing in F. I was fed up searching and calling so I booked one of the dates she told me. She said don,t bother to do research before, best to call them because i would waste my time to research for nothing! Living in the UK using AS miles is very restricted (only CX from Europe to Hong Kong) so I will not bother to buy any more AS miles but will stick with AA miles instead.

Thats a bit disappointing. Ive got some banked for a future trip to Europe from Australia. I certainly hope I have more luck then that.

It's important to remember AS is not bound, nor has access to oneworld inventory. Oneworld member airlines cannot discriminate which other members can have their inventory or charge different rates.

However- partnership agreements operate differently whereby if you find CX inventory available on BA it does not automatically make it available to AS as they're not in Oneworld.

So the agent is right it is potentially a waste to do your own research as there's no guarantees it will match. I've had many occasions where they cannot see seats and BA,CX and QF show availability.

I used Qantas to research CX availability. Maybe I got lucky but I found LAX(f)-HKG(j)-BNE, called and booked it. No trouble finding it and was a very easy process. That was booked late last year so maybe something has changed since.
