Alaska Airlines joining Oneworld

Well QF had considered BNE-SEA but chose ORD instead. Maybe this may change things, or AA will fly it.

We’ll see SYD-SEA before BNE-SEA. And we won’t see AA flying it any time soon. They aren’t even flying from their main hub (DFW) yet - let alone a partner hub. I’m actually tipping the next AA flight to be to MEL. Probably DFW-MEL if I were a betting man. SYD-SEA might be the death of seasonal SYD-YVR.

OMaaT points out some possible downsides to AS joining OneWorld (for Milage Plan members):

Here’s my huge concern. Alaska has some of the best mileage redemption rates in the industry, though they also take an unconventional approach to award pricing.

They have a different award chart for every partner airline, and you can’t mix airlines on an award. In theory I suspect we’ll see them eventually come up with an award chart for all on all oneworld airlines (where you can mix partners), but I almost certainly think this won’t be good news:

I can’t imagine they’ll continue to allow stopovers on one-way awards
I can’t imagine they’ll maintain the same good prices they currently have
I hope I’m wrong, but I’m quite worried about this…

I'm wondering if buying AS miles again at bonus time (30/40% extra) will be more beneficial once they join OneWorld?
I used to use AS miles CNS/HKG/CNS in J when CX did that route, normal price $5k, the points cost me around $1750 plus a hundred or so in fees.

I only skimmed the release but saw it largely as a re-hash of the oneworld release on 13 February where Alaska's joining was announced.

The main difference is that the February release only discussed Alaska's "intention" to join the alliance. Now, Oneworld is saying it will join.

Alaska Airlines is still on track to join Oneworld on 31 March (next month), but looks like Oneworld redemptions won't be launched until a few months later (summer 2021 in the northern hemisphere).

Been buying cheap miles with Alaskan for years cant wait for the plethora of flights that will be available on OneWorld to use them.

I just hope they don't "gut" their award charts! Although so far, there's no indication that this will happen.

I used a batch of AS miles on three occasions CNS/HKG/CNS on CX direct at the time, miles were a real bargain @50% off.
Another were all 2 x J - CNS/SYD/HKG QF Stop - to JFK CX stop and return to OZ with stops. Have Aussie mates who work in HK reason for the 2 stops plus breaks the long haul.

Well Alaska Airlines is now officially a Oneworld member.

Looks like Qantas hasn't fully updated its website yet but AS First class fare classes are due to be realigned to Business levels for the purposes of both earning and redeeming Qantas points.

It's not yet possible to redeem Alaskan miles across the entire Oneworld network, but this is supposed to roll out in a few months.

I just looked and saw that AS still haven't established redemptions of their miles on oneWorld carries outside their existing 'Award Charts'. Last I heard was going to be 'early 2022'. Anyone have any news or promises?
