Dave, you're a legend. I'm calling FC now to see what they're going to quote me on K and L class tickets.

S, K and L are all cattle class, aren't they? They just change the flexibility of the flights? Doesn't matter anyway.. keen on lounge access in LHR! :)

Yes I would say the upgrade to L V or R would definitely be worth it. I started with a B class PER-HKG on my challenge to reconnect with a LONE4. :D

But I'm wondering myself if I wish to keep the PS status with QF. The PS benefits (such as they are) that Sapphire AA benefits do not give you are:
1. The 10 kg international baggage
2. immediate access to better seating on QF
OTOH as a partner elite that seating can be requested.

Now the request for the expert opinion
1. I'll be AA PLAT next year no matter what I do by 01 Jan 2007
2. I have some trips planned (now and Jan 2007) where the cost of J over Y is inexpensive CMB-BKK-SIN-BKK-HKG. And in the scheme of things the earned mileage difference between AA and QF isn't all that much (about 6K on QF 8K on AA)
3. I need about 2 to 5K QF miles (moves past a useful retained mileage point (54K - 3 one ways in Oz or a RT to SIN) And would give me a 5K QF upgrade replacement "bonus"
4. I booked a HKG-SIN QF award (actually more useful than the AA award possibilities) .

Do I credit to QF and retain PS or hand it over to AA and lose about 3K Qpoints in 2007.

Wandering wandering ?????

Fred

Oh and one more question about the AA Plat Challenge (I'd read the proper thread for it.. but it's kind of gotten a bit big for me to read the whole lot!).

If we start the challenge on December 1st, fly over to LHR and qualify immediately upon landing (which we should with K class), how long does Platinum status last? Until the end of 2006? Or the end of 2007?

Thanks again, Phil

They are indeed all economy class fares with their own rules.

If you got for the K fare, you can earn 42,0000 - 46,000 miles from the trip ( 2 r/ts to anywhere in Australia/New Zealand ) and get Platinum on arrival in London; if you go for the L fare, you can earn about 16,000 miles and Platinum on arrival back in Oz.

The 30,000 miles is worth something so may make it worth going for

Your Platinum status will be valid until 29th Februrary 2008 at which point it drops to gold ( unless you earn 50k qpoints/qmiles or fly 60 sectors during 2007 which will qualify you for the following year )

They've run out of L class, and K class was going to cost circa $1000 per person (there are two of us) to upgrade to. Might as well stick with S class.

Thanks anyway.

Hmm... What fare basis have you got booked and what date are you travelling?

upgrading to K one way would complete the challenge, you dont need K both ways to complete the challenge. Also , for you to get the benefits when travelling together, only one of you needs to complete the challenge. If you upgrade 1 booking to K for one-way , once of you will complete the challenge and when travelling together will have access to lounges et al

Does that mean what class we're in? S class. That's all I know.

Apparently it was $580 for the class upgrade, $150 for the reissuance fee, $180 for fuel surcharges.

We bought the tix 5 months ago. :(

Doesn't matter, not the end of the world. Still get to go to pommy land! :)

The fare basis is the multi-character code that defines the fare details. It will be something like SLBB1Y or similar.

Thats the shame about fuel surcharges. The re-issue process will trigger a recaalculation of all the fuel surcharges, even for sectors that are not changing.

Well, that is pretty close to the end of the world, especially if you visit the south west corner tip of the country :p .
