Since Amex introduced approval without signature in supermarkets I have absolutely no problem using it for amounts under $35. It's quicker.

Sent from the Throne

These days, as we move to Chip and PIN, Swipe and Go for payments under $35, and contactless technologies, I'm finding that payment by card is FASTER than cash, and easier. So I'm doing it more and more. The points on these low-value transactions are not really that exciting, but the ease of not having to carry more than about $20 in cash is!

I use my Amex for everything. Unless they do not take Amex. Then I use my Jet Star MC.
The points are important. But in addition I am able to accurately track the vast majority of my spending.

I've used my Amex and Visa cards many times for transactions under $5 but the other day I couldn't bring myself to use the Visa for a $1 transaction at a bookshop. I've had some strange looks from supermarket checkout staff when I've used the Amex card for under $5 but I figure big business can afford it.

We regularly dine at a local restaurant, and my daughter usually wants ice cream afterwards. But not at the restaurant. At MacDonalds. Fortunately, there's a Maccas nearby, so we just drive through (saves time too, and gets her in bed at a reasonable hour).

One single sundae. Amex. I never get a strange look.

I bought a bottle of water from a vending machine using my Amex today.

Hi my name's simongr and I have a points abuse problem...

You are giving me hope!

Please can you go and buy a microwave, washing machine, fridge, dishwasher, cooker and TV now. It won't half help our economy.........and keep me flying at the pointy end. :p

The lowest value item I have ever put on an Amex was 39 cents. But that was during the 5K points per 5 transactions promotion.

Can beat that. I went to buy some chilli, lime, mint and a few bits and pieces. The *only* thing they had in the entire basket i needed was chilli. One chilli, $0.03c. They were going to give it to me free (also during the 5k per 5 promo and I had no cap). I politely refused and swiped away for 3c :)

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! :)

I think "topic drift" is in full swing here, so allow me to step in and arrest it.

Back to "on topic" discussion please :o

I wouldn't call myself a Frequent Flyer. At this point in my life I certainly don't fly for the pleasure of it. My first interest is in supporting my family, and to do that I need a job, and my job entails me needing to visit sites/offices and hence I fly. If i can take advantage of tips/tricks do make the flying more comfortable I will do so, but I'm certainly not flying for the sake of flying, and therefore wouldn't consider myself a frequent flyer.

Once the kids are are older and an extra day or three away from home wont hurt as much, THEN I'll reconsider.

My job and employment warrants me being a frequent flyer. Points I don't seek them but if they are there then fantastic! I don't count status credits. I find that travel is exciting, I love the fact that my job involves going to exotic places. Without revealing too much. I have been sent to DPS many a time to try and explain to Indonesian officials the intricacies of the Australian demeanour :/ luckily now I am 'higher' up enough that I need not fly to that hideous place :D

I'd change your user name, before ASIS come looking for you !! ( or they are they work-mates ?? )
