woops new york I mean. SYD - JFK (via Tokyo) for $1193.74 return. dates I found departed april 8 return april 23 - seems amazing value to me.

Yeah, it is amazing what prices are on offer to the U.S at the moment.

I think that fare is related to the AA sale ex-Australia here: http://www.aa.com/content/au/specialOffers/fareSale.jhtml

(and as seems to occur with the AA specials, it's in Q Class for both flights, which makes it difficult to credit the whole journey to either AA or QF)

Slight bummer - still, crediting corresponding flights to AA/QF @ .5/mile in each program is at least something, while a great discount fare!

Re: Amazing fare on AA to new york ... all fixed ...

Yes, AU <-> USA is great value right now !
If only other destinations were, costs more to do a MEL-SIN-MEL for example than this flight mentioned.

Please check my sums on this cheap Q flight in regards to AAdvantage:

The Qantas flight MEL-NRT is 5087 miles = 2543 AAdvantage miles + 2543 EQM*
then AA metal NRT-LAX-JFK = 3958 AAdvantage miles + 3958 EQM
then back on AA metal in reverse = 3958 AAdvantage miles + 3958 EQM
Then Qantas flight to MEL is 5087 miles = 2543 AAdvantage miles + 2543 EQM*

* Note the EQM for the Qantas flights are not valid for the platinum challenge, only normal status accrual

So you end up with 13,000 AAdvantage miles and 7916 EQM miles towards Platinum Challenge and/or 13,002 miles towards Gold Status ?

Q fares on QF do not earn anything on AAdvantage. No miles or EQP.

QF fare earning is as follows:

A, F, R = 150% miles and 1.5 EQP per mile
C, D, I, J = 125% miles and 1.5 EQP per mile
W, T = 110% miles and 1.5 EQP per mile
B, Y = 100% miles and 1.5 EQP per mile
H, K = 100% miles and 1.0 EQP per mile
M, V, L = 50% miles and 1.0 EQP per mile
G, O, S = 50% miles and 0.5 EAP per mile.

Anything else is non-eligible

Any chance the MEL-NRT flights is an AA codeshare on the way to the states?

So if Q class earns nothing at all
AA metal NRT-LAX-JFK = 7916 AAdvantage miles + 3958 EQM
then back on AA metal in reverse = 7916 AAdvantage miles + 3958 EQM

So you end up with 15,832 AAdvantage miles and 7916 EQM miles towards Platinum Challenge?

There is no AA codeshare from Australia to Tokyo (NRT). If you want some AA miles and EQP, you can select a JL flight rather than the QF flight. 70% earning, according to the JL partner page on AA.com. And you'd probably end up on NRT-JFK rather than NRT-LAX-JFK. Check the fare rules if NRT-LAX-JFK is allowed.

holy smoke! just came across these fares on AA.com Aus when doing some research and couldn't believe it - PER to NYC for < $1200 incl taxes? PER-LAX for < $1000? that's incredible. my work has paid >$1000 for a return flight to KTA!

PER-NRT alone is usually more expensive than that, and NYC is often >3k!

so how much are AA paying qantas for the PER-NRT return flight, and how do they make money? i don't get it... but i do wish my US holiday later in the year was in March now...

and would you earn QF points for these if you put your number down? (not that it matters at that price)

QFF points on the QF (100%) / JL (50%) segments in Q Class.
AA points on the AA (100%) / JL (70%) segments in Q class.

I got $1193.74 return over easter! I am still amazed. The downside is a long transit on tokyo (11 hours) but hell at that price I can eat some great sushi in Tokyo and be back at the airport in heaps of time!

Will give you some good time to tire youself out for the NRT-JFK leg :)

I've done this routing before a couple of times (BNE/SYD-NRT-JFK). The first time I overnighted in Tokyo (~20 hours), the second was a ~12 hour stopover. Enjoyed the second more as I could get out of the airport and spend a day in Tokyo without having my bags floating around.

I think you will find the AA special fares are for a QF coded flight to and from Narita. If flying from BNE it will still be the JAL plane but with the QF codeshare so still the problems with points earning.
Also from BNE -NRT getting the JAL flight means you can connect in NRT with the AA flight to JFK.There is 80 minutes between scheduled arrival of JAL and departure of AA.Have made that connection though 4 out of 4.
Also a heads up that the AA business special which has been in place for the last 12 months but advertised as expiring 30th March will be continued-I could get that fare for August.About $A7000 for LAX and $A8000 for JFK.So for all those AA EXPs(alas not me now) a chance to use those EVIPS.
