just a quick one,
have a return domestic flight reward from amex platinum to take. With this new promotion that is going to start with earning points and status credits on reward tickets (confirmed to me by Velocity plat call center) do you think i will earn on the amex reward seat. the plat help desk seems to think i will but did not have all t&c's. just thought id ask what the pros on here thought might be the case.

cheers

Well to answer that we would need to be able read the Terms and Conditions. Otherwise we will all just be guessing.

ie could for example exclude existing bookings.

The Amex flights haven't come out of the rewards flight buckets in the past. I hope they would get sc but I fear the current situation will continue.

Had a return Brisbane to Melbourne return in December 2012 as my Amex Platinum card reward. When I booked with Amex in November 2012 the Amex agent mentioned that I might get status credits but no points.
Checked my velocity statement after the flights and flights were mentioned but said not eligible for status credits.

Thanks for the replies, yeah il wait for the terms and conditions, not too worried either way as I have easily enough flights to requal for plat a few months into the year, that said a few extra points and status credits are always welcome.

I can confirm this one: booked the Amex reward flight SYD-MCY-SYD for the +1 whose account pools to mine (flew early Jan 13). Was surprised to discover the SCs and point had credited and passed through.

Never pooled with it, but all of my flights have posted as Not Valid For Earn. Maybe something has changed.

They should not be eligible, but if they do post for you, I reckon the best thing to do is keep quite about it - especially on public fora :-|

IME, the AmEx redemptions are not eligible for points / SCs (and credit as such). However -- if you cxl the reservation and then use the credit towards another booking -- it's treated as a revenue fare.

That was under Navitaire .. who knows how it will work under Sabre.

Yup - $80 cxl fee if I remember correctly - I wrote it off as the cost of being able to use upgrade certificates. :)

Is is possible to book the AMEX free flight on an expensive route like SYD-PER and cancel it with the $80 fee and use the credit to purchase a different flight like SYD-MEL?

It was possible, but credit may not be enough to buy return flight, as the credit amount was significantly less than the public fare. There is a whole thread about this. Whether it is possible now is another story.

would also like to know if buying syd per return and cancelling yields a $ amount and if you once again have to spend on a return to say mel or adelaide and then use upgrades. or if its possible to just use for a one way to perth in higher fare bucket.

It did when I bought PER-MEL return in late 2012 and cancelled it, but as I mentioned above, the credit was significantly less than the cheapest available ticket on the Virgin website (a little over half). I then bought PER-MEL flexi with the credit and upgraded it to J with points, but I understand it has tightened up a lot and you may not be able to buy flexi fares anymore.

I think you can, but the credits you get aren't as generous and you have to go through AMEX - their credit seems to be very low, while the rebook cost of flights seems high (vs online price). The fee has become 80 (VA) + 27 (Amex), you can go up a fair class, but they seemed to suggest I couldn't go to a lower fare bucket (which doesn't sound like a real 'credit')

I just bit the bullet and did a mid-year holiday period PER-SYD-PER booking to cancel later as my anniversary date was approaching and this way the flight won't vanish into ether.
