Amex acceptance

Adelaide Oval has fallen into this too.

They’ve replaced their registers at their outlets with self serve checkouts, which don’t take Amex.

This is despite the old manned outlets taking Amex and advertising that they accept all cards.

The reason for the two machines is probably that the newer ones have lower merchant fees so they're pushing the cashiers to use those, but the old one is still available for Amex/UnionPay which might not be available on the new setup. The opposite can happen too though, a non profit I help with didn't used to take Amex but we now have Square machines which are easier to use (and integrate with our gift shop inventory system), and take Amex with no extra effort from us.

I'm not sure if this is linked but I've also noticed a surge in places that are now surcharging for any card payment, often at different rates for different cards that aren't disclosed until you tap it (the generic "Surcharge may apply" message).
I realise I'm a bit late, but on Tyro terminals (and perhaps others too, though I haven't tried), you can press the INFO button to reveal the surcharges.

I had noticed this recently. It's a useful feature, although my frustration with not knowing there'll be a surcharge until the terminal is presented to me is still there. I did also cause some frustration to a poor sales attendant the other day by pressing the Info button and carefully inspecting the various surcharges before then saying I'd pay cash, all while a queue piled up behind me. 😄

I think businesses should be required to post it at the entrance, especially if it's the type of venue where you get the service and then pay on exit (like a restaurant). There's been a few times lately where I've got table service and only discovered there's a surcharge when the terminal is presented to me after the meal. Those places I definitely don't go back to.
